A longtime inhabitant of Berlin, John Osborn is a British native who was at the core of the city’s house and techno during its mid-00s heyday. Back then, Berghain wasn’t the tourist mecca it is today, while artists of all types could still thrive in the city off the back of its cheap rent and food. While the Berlin capital might have changed immeasurably in recent times, it still reverberates to a discerning electronic music beat. And John Osborn, of course, still dedicates his life to said sounds. The founder and creative director behind the DRED and TANSTAAFL labels, John very much adopts a ‘quality over quantity’ approach to his own output, only releasing music which he feels truly passionate about. It’s a shrewd way of working that has resulted in respect aplenty among seasoned DJs, and aside from keeping the quality high, it ensures both his and his label’s releases remain both heavily anticipated and highly coveted.

-このミックスはどちらでどのように制作されたのですか？

16年間住んでいるベルリンの自宅兼DJスタジオでPioneer CDJ 2000nexus、Technics SL-1200 MK2、Allen & Heath Xone42、Pioneer HDJ-2000 headphonesを主に使って録音したんだ。

基本的にはハイエンドのリッピングステーションを通してレコーディングした60%バイナルのミックスなんだ。
そこに未発表のデジタルファイルと既存のレコードの音を少し足した。
それをdolby cを使ったYamaha KX-580のテープデッキでTDKのSA90カセットテープに再録音したんだ。そうすることでミックスの全ての音がまとまって人間らしい音が出ると思ってる。それと同時に窓を開けた状態の部屋をTascam DR-07デジタルレコーダーで録音した。この2面のテープレコーディングをデジタル化してAbeltonを使って紡ぎ合わせるんだ。でも実際作られたミックスは編集していないんだよ。
前にこのレコーディング方法を試した時は1200sを通して直接テープに録音したんだ。今回は主にnexus2000を使って高品質なバイナルリップスとミックスさせた。（Nagaoka cartridge、Rega P3 turntable、NAD pp3i pre-phone ampとabeltonにインプットしたアナログ/デジタルコンバーターを使うことでTechnics 1200とShure White label needlesを使うよりも音質が段違いに上質になるんだ。）


-コンセプトがあれば教えてください。

まるで慎重にプランを立てながら進めたジグソーパズルのようだったよ。90分の中に25トラックくらい入っていて、ハウスにしてはすごく曲数が多いんだ。ハウスはその曲が持つグルーブとフロウを活かすことが大事で、曲数が多すぎたり短くミックスしてしまったらそういったハウスに必要な要素が削がれてしまう。だから僕は長い時間をかけて正しいレコードと正しい順番を探したんだ。全てのトラックがミックスされて全体で１つのフロウとなるように試しながら。このミックスのゴールは通常3時間かけてプレイするトラックを、いかに自然に90分の中に圧縮するかということだった。


-最近の活動を教えてください。

このミックスだよ。（笑）レーベル〈Run Out Run〉と〈Hotflush〉にトラックを作っているよ。あとベルリンのオールドスクールなカップルにリミックスを制作中。久々にデザインの仕事もやったり、いい父親したり、先週の金曜日の”Panorama Bar”っていう素晴らしい場所でやったような最高のギグをやったりしている。あの夜は「Atonal festival 」も開催されていたからみんなそっちに行ってしまうんじゃないかと不安だったんだ。実際たくさんの人がフェスに行ってたみたいだけど、朝5時にステージに立ったら”Panorama Bar”はパンパンに人が入っていたよ。自分のセットをすごく楽しむことができた。そして今は台湾経由で日本に行くことに徐々に心の準備を始めているところ。「The Labyrinth」で会えるのを楽しみにしてるよ！

~ About The Story ~

A power is on the earth and in the air,
From which the vital spirit shrinks afraid,
And shelters him in nooks of deepest shade,
From the hot steam and from the fiery glare.
Look forth upon the earth—her thousand plants
Are smitten; even the dark sun-loving maize
Faints in the field beneath the torrid blaze;
The herd beside the shaded fountain pants;
For life is driven from all the landscape brown;
The bird hath sought his tree, the snake his den,
The trout floats dead in the hot stream, and men
Drop by the sunstroke in the populous town:
As if the Day of Fire had dawned, and sent
Its deadly breath into the firmament.

This story was translated by an ancient scribe and is told in different ways depending on the culture. The chapters have been lost but the story remains intact.

Ssg special - john osborn @ panorama bar.

The mix was recorded onto a 90min Maxwell UR90 Cassette using my Yamaha tape deck. As the mix was recorded so was the sound of the room via a Tascam digital recorder. These separate recordings have been 'spliced' together in Logic. No edits to the mix have been made and all the hiss & crackle has been left. No track list, keeping it just like we used to record mixes back in '95.
