minimal detroit vol.092It was a very special honour to be asked to record a mix for the Minimal Detroit crew and it led to me spending some time thinking of the tracks and theme before recording. The 'Detroit' sound and style had to be woven into the mix with Spacey atmospherics, Bleeped out mechanical rhythms, Electro grinds and Heavy broken machine workouts. The initial mix kicks of a little deeper building into tracks from some true Detroit originators like Anthony Shake Shakir and Robert Hood blending up with newer artists like Defekt, Ocktawian, Handmade DJ, Oliver Rosemann, Ritzi Lee who are all advancing on and keeping the original blueprint styles alive.

Jon Hussey - Live at Wild Roots Festival

We have the pleasure of hosting a live club recording from Jon Hussey at The Sugar Club for RLSD Records. Jon need’s little introduction, as he has been a key cog in the Dublin techno machine for many years, and boasts legendary status in Irish dance music’s framework. Jon showcases why he’s earned fabled status as a DJ with a trip through various moods, as Jon intertwines jacking grooves, deep and windings atmospheres and rolling bass swarms wrapped up into an hour of techno funk.

Jon Hussey‘s name carries weight within Irish techno, from playing alongside some of the biggest names in the industry such as Jeff Mills, Joey Beltram, The Advent, Neil Landstrumm, Thomas P Heckmann and many many more to playing across Europe in some of the desired clubs. Jon has frequently played in Berlin over the years, and notably played alongside Mark Broom in the infamous Tresor.

Jon creates expertly crated techno, that is categorically deep, rolling and packed with intricate rhythmic touches, but when speaking about Jon, categorising it is utterly pointless, as his evolution as a DJ and producer is incessant. Jon has released music on Irish imprints Earwiggle, Delinquent Delivery and RLSD. His collaborations with the late Stuey Lyons [R.I.P.] are thought to be some of his best work, receiving widespread notoriety and support from some of the leads techno DJs in the world. Jon also notably had his work on RLSD remixed by Japanese techno icon Takaaki Itoh.

There’s something about a Jon Hussey mix that seem’s instantly identifiable , which on the surface makes no sense at all as Jon has an extremely eclectic style, but his mixes and DJ set’s have a real charm and originality that doesn’t come by too often, and they’re particularly distinguishable. This mix is no different, as Jon skips through a multitude of moods and avenues, letting tracks breathe at the right moments, and smashing the accelerator when needs be. Jon hammers through slamming grooves and intertwines warpy rollers alongside classic jacking cuts.

Live recordings seem to be a little less common than they were a couple of years ago, maybe because there’s an enormous amount of pressure for DJs to cough up podcasts every few months, which takes focus from live recordings. This is a raw live recording that’s a captivating representation of a real DJ at work, redirecting the vibe at the pinnacle moment’s and changing mixing style’s based on the room. This is a real treat.

To round off 2023, I am delighted to present Irish techno DJ Jon Hussey. One of the most consistently brilliant techno DJs out there.

He has promoted and resided at many techno clubs throughout Ireland as well as playing in many techno havens across Europe including Amsterdam, London, Bratislava, Berlin, Leeds, Turin and New York.

Jon has played alongside many of techno music’s greats and some of his all-time favourite artists from Biosphere and Plaid to renowned Techno artists like Surgeon, Joey Beltram, Jeff Mills, Steve Bicknell, Sunil Sharpe, Takaaki Itoh, Ancient Methods, Loktibrada, Rumenige, PLAYER, Dave Clarke, Mark Broom, Inigo Kennedy, Neil landstrumm, Reeko, DJ Boss, Bas Mooy, PERC, Hardfloor, Oscar Mulero, Jerome Hill, Paula Temple, Ellen Allien, Exium and Thomas P Heckmann.

Jon has previously released with fellow Techno DJ Sunil Sharpe as part of a joint project under the moniker 'Tricaustic' with “the Caustophobic Pressure EP” on Komisch records, this was well received and supported in the Techno community.

Jon has also had other successful techno releases on RLSD records (Dark Motif), EARWIGGLE records (Eel Behaviour series), Ceili Tracks, Deliquent Delivery and Circuit Structure Records.

I had the pleasure of playing back to back with Jon a few years ago in Galway, Ireland. Hopefully we'll do it again sometime.

From the Archives is a series focused on the appreciation of times past, where we will be sharing a range of never before heard recordings from the 90s and 00s.

For our first instalment we welcome one of Ireland’s best and most prestigious DJ’s who has a history of playing techno for 30 years, Jon Hussey. He has been so kind to share a mix recording of his from 2005.

“Around that time I was playing frequently in Slovakia and it includes some killer Slovak tracks from that era with artists like Loktibrada, Rumenige and Takaaki Itoh who was based in Bratislava during that time featuring. The mix also contains tracks from the Birmingham / UK side which was very closely linked in sound and ethos with artists like Regis, Surgeon, Mark Broom and New Yorks Birmingham connection Function!

It was a truly brilliant time for heavier broken rhythm Techno and definitely a golden time in the Slovak Techno history, amazing to be involved and part of the experience there and hopefully captures some of the energy and vibes from then which has also heavily influenced what is happening today with Rhythmic Techno.”

Jon Hussey is one of the true pioneers of the Irish Techno scene and has now been playing for three decades since the inception of his Planet Dub night at Dublin's legendary Columbia Mills club. It's a real showcase of his style, weaving tracks from past, present and future spanning his deep knowledge of Techno grooves, while always embedding blueprint tracks from the history vaults in his sets, threading his underground roots and connecting some of today’s classier Techno productions. Jon Hussey presents VorTech - Mission #1 on 2FM

Jon Hussey is hailed as a pioneer of the Irish Techno scene, kick-starting the infamous Planet Dub night in ’94 at Columbia Mills / Waterfront, Dublin. Since then Jon has promoted and resided at many Techno clubs throughout Ireland as well as playing in many Techno havens across Europe including Amsterdam, Bratislava, Berlin, London, Leeds, Exeter, Turin and New York. 

In 1999 Jon was among the first group from Ireland to qualify for the Red Bull Music Academy held in Berlin where he showcased his Irish Techno skills. 

In 2001 he helped electronic music maestro and lecturer Kenneth Harte to setup and establish the first DJ techniques and electronic music production course in the ‘Bray Institute for Further Education’ BIFE which is still to this day the only full time course DJ & Music Technology courses in Ireland. 

A quote from the national Irish radio station 2FM in their Late-Night Sessions Blog stated “Jon Hussey is one of the longest serving true purveyors of Techno in Ireland, running nights in the early days of Dublin's dance scene, when techno to most people meant U96 or 2 Unlimited. Consistently one of the best DJs around, Jon never lets the side down” giving a rare insight into Jon's personality as a DJ! Jon Hussey is now playing Techno for 3 decades and is regarded as one of the longest if not the longest DJ solely playing Techno on the Irish scene. 

Jon Hussey has previously released with fellow Techno DJ Sunil Sharpe as part of a joint project under the moniker 'Tricaustic' with “the Caustophobic Pressure EP” on Komisch records, Jon has also released his productions on RLSD Records, Earwiggle, Ceili tracks, Circuit Structure Records and on the Netherlands based label R3volution Records for the Viktims Vol.1 EP alongside some excellent current producers like Linear System and Mattias Fridell. One of Jons most well received collaboration track Saol Fórsa a title he gave the posthumous work with dear friend Stuey Lyons (RIP) on Deliquent Delivery in ’22 was championed by many industry favourites including Ben Sims, Freddy K and Blasha & Alatt. Jons latest track ‘What if’ has just been released on a new Delinquent Delivery VA and he has also created recent remixes for Dublin band ‘Dumb Posh Hippies’ album track ‘Ego Ripper’ and also for Swiss based producer Maeksll for his ‘Staub 02’ album track have received excellent feedback from the Techno community. 

Further releases are planned for this year on Delinquent Delivery records and new Dublin based record label SCART

Over the past decade he has kept this passion nurtured by being continuously involved in similar projects and innovations and recently organised a group of young rising Irish DJs and producers to participate at the pioneering PLUG “Plug European Electronic Music Conference” in Berlin. 

Music wise Jon has played alongside many of his all time favourite artists from Plaid to Surgeon, Joey Beltram, Jeff Mills, Steve Bicknell, Sunil Sharpe, Takaaki Itoh, Ancient Methods, Loktibrada, Rumenige, Dave Clarke, Mark Broom, Henning Baer, Inigo kennedy, Neil Landstrumm, Reeko, Grovskopa, DJ Boss, Bas Mooy, Perc, Hardfloor, Oscar Mulero, Jerome Hill, AnD, Truss, Paula Temple, Christian Wunsch and Exium!!

In 2011 Jon dedicated some production time with fellow Techno DJ Sunil Sharpe as part of a joint project under the moniker Tricaustic and released “the Caustophobic Pressure EP” on Komisch records which was well received and supported by artists such as Dave Clarke, Surgeon, Peter Van Hoesen, Anthony Shakir, Smear, Kriz, DJ 3000 and many more.

Recently the national radio station (2FM) were quoted in their Late Night Sessions Blog as stating that “Jon Hussey is one of the longest serving true purveyors of Techno in Ireland, running nights in the early days of Dublin's dance scene, when techno to most people meant U96 or 2 Unlimited. Consistently one of the best DJs around, Jon never lets the side down” giving a rare insight into Jon's personality as a DJ!

Jon Hussey, a pioneer of the Irish Techno scene DJing since the early nineties, kick-starting at the infamous Planet Dub night in Dublin. He has promoted and resided at many Techno clubs throughout Ireland as well as playing in many Techno havens across the world including Amsterdam, London, New York, Bratislava, Berlin, Leeds and Turin.

In '99 Jon was among the first group from Ireland to qualify for the Red Bull Music Academy which was held in Berlin.
