Dwight Zscheile is a professor of congregational mission and leadership at Luther Seminary, and his wife, Blair Pogue, is a priest and canon for vitality and innovation in the Episcopal Church in Minnesota. They join Leader’s Way host Brandon Nappi for a conversation about their joint passion for engaging the innovative ways the Church is renewing its commitment to community and communion by meeting people where they are.  Brandon talks with Dwight and Blair about their new book, Embracing the Mixed Ecology: Inherited and New Forms of Christian Community Flourishing Together, which unpacks the theological language of “mixed ecology,” and how this language can help us imagine what is possible in our church communities.

68: A World Thirsty for Accountability with Loretta Ross

In this episode, Ji Li discusses her book, At the Frontier of God’s Empire with Chloë Starr. The book tells the story of French missionary Alfred Caubrière who before his murder in 1948 left behind some 800 letters to his family, as well as 13 volumes of transcripts of everyday conversations in the local dialect among villagers in Santaizi, Manchuria. The episode discusses the life of Caubrière and especially his experience of the weeks-long siege of Santaizi church by the Boxer Rebels in 1900, as well as his depictions of the lives and beliefs of local Catholics.

Jennifer Banks in Conversation with Anthony T. Kronman

Joni Clare is a performing vocalist, songwriter, and vocal coach. She also studies conscious control and physical misuse patterns currently in a teacher-training program at the Oregon Center of the Alexander Technique. She has been performing all her life, but professionally for seven years and teaching private voice lessons for two. She studied four years of music and voice along with two years of piano instruction while earning an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Singing away, she also emphasized experimental improvisation, composition, and vocal pedagogy. 

Clare has a strong, eclectic sound mixing original soul singing with classical and experimental training. She holds mature technical control and lets the unknown aspect of music carry her authentic, expressive lyrics. Philosophies of awareness and exploring the unknown cross over from her training in the Alexander Technique to create a balance between the mechanical and spiritual voice.
