Perth-based artist lia t has an ear for capturing quotidian detail and making it feel special. At the very end of 2020, she released sketches222 on Deep Water, a collection of wistful ambient etudes that contained dozens of field recordings, mostly taken during the producer’s time in Osaka. Earlier that year, she also collaborated with Copenhagen-based artist Perko on mini-album highlight ‘Grounds’, a stunning 2-minute snapshot of the inimitable sounds that make up the city.

Her latest release, and opening track on Music Company's forthcoming Vector Fields Vol. 3 compilation, is a little different. Whereas ‘Grounds’ channelled the hum of the urban environment, ‘Sweetapple Lane’ is a more celestial affair—the aural equivalent of an aeroplane ride through a cloud. The track opens with a field recording of passing traffic but it quickly dissipates. Gradually, the piece thickens; the synths intensify and several other electronic elements drift in and out. It’s a noticeable expansion in scope from the producer’s music to date but it doesn’t sacrifice any of the intimacy that makes both sketches222 and ‘Grounds’ feel so personal. It’s more like being able to listen to someone’s thoughts as they fall into a daydream. That sense of reverie is heightened by lia’s clever use of field recordings. The producer bookends the track with them. In the last 30 seconds, she reintroduces one—this time nearer water or a beach—to bring the track slowly back down to earth. It’s these familiar, everyday sounds that add to the song’s quiet grandeur; they make it that much easier to get lost in its many overlapping folds.

The jungle was thick and dense, a deep sea of green engulfed their pathway as they wandered between tall trees, wild shrubbery and delicate flowers. It was warm in the midst of the forest, they had been told it might be by those who had come before them. From time to time the wild songs of birds would echo and dance amidst the leaves up above, there were no creatures to be seen but they were certainly there, watching over them as they passed through the thick. Soon the sun would set upon this remarkable place, they would be plunged into darkness as the wild things danced all around. 

Pandit Pam Pam is the moniker of São Paulo electronic artist, Eduardo Ramos. He is set to release a new record on Music Company, a dreamy experimental collection of synthesizer focussed tracks for deep listening. He describes the record as follows...

“I recorded mostly in deep summer in the countryside. Surrounded by trees and lots of sun. I was looking through the window at a small gathering of lemon trees and orange trees.”

A seasoned selector in her homebase of Naarm/Melbourne, Jazz (@spaceswithinspace) is a rising presence in the electronic music scene at large. A regular fixture on the radio (as PBS 106.7FM ‘Spaces Within Space’ host and resident on both Skylab and Hope Street) as well as in the booth at countless parties and events, her creative mixing style and quirky, always on-point selections have seen her become a much-loved contributor to the bustling Naarm/Melbourne scene.

Expertly blending bleepy synthesisers, broken percussion and playful psychedelia, Jazz’s Patterns of Perception 84 is a perfect snapshot of her idiosyncratic style and taste. Recorded on a dark and rainy morning during Melbourne’s recent fifth lockdown, this set steers Jazz's musical narrative into a dark, dystopian direction, offering an energetic interpretation of the unpredictable reality that we find ourselves in.

‘Quinto Relatório Anual’ is the latest release from São Paulo electronic artist, Pandit Pam Pam. The follow up album to his 2020 EP, ‘Quarto Relatório Anual’.  The artist uses much of the same instrumentation, intuition and improvisation more commonly found in performance than cut to tape. 
The two titles are inspired by Throbbing Gristle’s influential 1977 ‘Second Annual Report’, one of the first known examples of the industrial genre. ‘Quarto Relatório Anual’ and ‘Quinto Relatório Anual’ were recorded in the Brazilian countryside, away from the busyness and complexity of  São Paulo life.

The eight track release straddles  ambient and post-club, the collection feels bucolic and futuristic at once.
'This record is full of mistakes. But I think this is life. I’d rather have those mistakes printed on tape, [over] a very pristine thing going on. Everything is too perfect nowadays and the beauty of life and nature is chance, mistakes, and randomness.'
Recorded to tape using his 25-year-old Tascam 442 4-track, Pandit Pam Pam manipulated the k7 tape in search of new depths of tone. The result is a beatless, ambient, distortion filled release - an ode to isolation, missing friends and long conversations.

"Wound Without A Tear is a compilation of “Australian” Ambient and Experimental Music; an area so often overlooked and misunderstood because it does not easily fall into historical context. However, the fifteen years (1993-2008) the collection cites–a period of early 90s post-rave ethereality defined by pleasure-centred spaces (chill-out rooms) and the personal computer’s emergence as a popular tool for file-sharing and secondary-living in the 00s–is befitting of closer examination.

The recordings were sourced from artists, labels, corrupted disk drives, CD-Rs, the WWW and archives of Melbourne’s 3RRR community radio station.

During the 1990s, as new technologies emerged and mass digital culture flourished, artists explored the emergent possibilities of the Internet with a utopian fervour, viewing the web and its plethora of images and information as a site of boundless potential. In the 2000s, file sharing connected people around the world directly to one another, and this incorporation of online experience into material objects, meant there was an increasingly porous border between the online and offline worlds–if there remained a border, at all."
