As Rebekah’s storming debut album Fear Paralysis is currently flying high, Soma present a specially selected remix pack to coincide with LP, enlisting label heads Slam, Grey Branches (aka Yves De May) and burgeoning UK Techno talents JoeFarr & Stephanie Sykes.

With each artist selecting their favourite album track, Slam step up first with their interpretation of the feisty Code Black, delivering an even more high octane version. Yes De May makes a welcome appearance on Soma under his Grey Branches moniker - his version of Tell Me Your Secrets sees a more broken beat, visceral affair take hold. JoeFarr drops two versions of 1997 Reprise, producing two very stylistic, hard-edged takes on Rebekah’s original. Rounding off this varied remix EP is UK techno newcomer Stephanie Sykes who recreates Breathe in a deep and stimulating manner.

Our mix series returns March 15, 2019 with the 9th edition mixed and compiled by Vatican Shadow. It includes 13 exclusive tracks available for download or on 2x12“ vinyl  [O-TON 119].

Since becoming a Berghain resident in 2017, Dominick Fernow’s risk-taking hybrid live/DJ sets as Vatican Shadow have become conduits for infusing techno with contrasting musical ideas – from noise, industrial and ambient to distorted melodies and rhythms that push the club’s borders in unexpected ways.

It’s an idiosyncratic approach to techno rooted not only in Fernow’s 25-plus years as an experimental and noise musician under more than a dozen aliases (e.g. Prurient, Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement) but also in his role as founder of the vital New York-based Hospital Productions, whose discography exceeds some 500 releases. The label – which in 2017 celebrated its 20-year anniversary – is also home to the majority of Vatican Shadow output to date.

Under that alias, Fernow’s numerous albums and 12”s (including 2017’s ‘Rubbish Of The Floodwaters’ on Ostgut Ton) oscillate between ominous, distorted machine-funk, techno and ambient electronics; equal parts noise, melody and rhythm. Since 2011, the project’s intentionally ambiguous visual identity has been defined by War on Terror-related imagery and track titles – and the media’s role therein.

Both the ‘Berghain 09’ mix and accompanying exclusive 12”s – featuring exclusive tracks by Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Virile Games, Los Angeles Death Cult, Ron Morelli, Volvox, JK Flesh, Alberich, Ugandan Methods | Prurient and Merzbow – reflect Vatican Shadow’s composite musical influences and relationship to Berghain as a club. Stylistically, the two vinyls are divided between clubbier and experimental electronics, with vocal samples of Genesis Breyer P-Orridge acting as a bridge between the two. All tracks on Side D end in locked grooves.

As Fernow describes in his own words:

“My interest in DJing developed naturally out of industrial music traditions such as mail art, tape trading, and sound collage. While this mix, of course, does not solely focus on cassettes, they were used as the bridge between the seemingly disparate areas and cross-sections of underground electronic edits you will find sewn together from diverse factions to create a sonic ‘cut up’. Accordingly, the artists featured with exclusive tracks span several continents and generations of electronic music subculture, from the birth of industrial in the UK and the rhythmic loops of Japanese noise, to the raw collision of genres found in the NYC underground. ‘Berghain 09’ is a tribute to the techno mixtapes that influenced me during my introduction to raves and dance music in the 90s.”

The Berlin-based British producer and DJ Mag cover star is one of the most influential artists at the helm of the brutal techno movement and ‘Murder In Birmingham’ - an homage to her home - is further validation of this fact.

With its thundering bass, robust percussion and haunting aesthetic, ‘Murder In Birmingham’ epitomises Rebekah and all that she stands for. The Parisian Maxime Iko delivers with „Pray For Us“ the follow-up EP for his BPitch debut „Concilium“ from 2018 and sounds as rousing, playful and danceable as rarely before. His music has always been based on
a strong groove, concise basslines, pitched down vocals and a sensitivity to the sexually charged energy of the gay parties that Maxime Iko co-organized in the French capital. The resident DJ from Ellen Allien‘s We Are Not Alone raves goes even further with “Pray For Us” and presents four equally strong tracks between hyperactive techno and retrofuturistic electro vibes - the theme of the EP is various visions of the apocalyp- se. City Galerie is a tribute to a mall in the north bavarian town of Aschaffenburg, where Lauer bought his first LPs . Straight up brutalo futuristic architecture. Functional and stable four-to-the-floor, with touches of iconic melodies and catchy rhythms. It’s a first timer for a Brazilian artist to feature on the label, but certainly a memorable one. KaioBarssalos hits the spot just right between driving techno with proper uumpf and snappy hypnotic synth riffs.
‘The Castle’ is a track with cleverly programmed delay on the lead. The melody is nostalgic and melancholic at the same time, making the track particularly suitable for home-listeners too.
Saturnian System has the acid and high pace in it’s groove. The short stabs and acid holds the drive, lead by tensive pad harmonies.
We get why Amelie Lens recently supported one of his releases, because for dance floors they seem very effective. Nothing is different in Falling Elithics, faster rhythm, higher notes.
Spreadless with Wesley Martins packs the dirty acid sounds with a dry pounding kick and Makornik reimagines Falling Elithics in a more repetitive way, an effective synth groove working its way up to a full-blown warehouse tool.
