@JanLoup is a DJ/producer based in Toulouse, France. Considering music as an aural, spiritual and emotional experience, she looks at it as a way to reconnect with herself. In a world of digital loneliness and hardcore consumerism, she tries to sublimate these moments of deep-seated nature through trance and dance. Responsible of a handfull of bass music oddities finding home on labels like @worst_rec, @Bigscience, @AirTexture, @sofaclubrecords or @Comicsansrec, Jan Loup is also a captivating DJ. Her mixes are magic spells changing people from a state to an another and her contribution to the serie is no exception. She chose the cubomedusa theme to explore a transcendental range of percussion and organic textures. Get lost in the venom.

Cubozoa, or box jellyfish, are cnidarian invertebrates distinguished by their box-like body. Some tropical species are extremely painful and sometimes lethal to humans because of their venom. The box jellyfish's nervous system is more developed than that of many other jellyfish. They possess a nerve ring around the base of the bell that coordinates their pulsing movements. 
Cubozoa are also unique in the possession of true eyes - complete with retinas, corneas and lenses. Some of them are constantly oriented toward the surface in order to use vegetals or other terrestrial signals as landmarks during the navigation. 
Although the notoriously dangerous species of box jellyfish are largely restricted to the tropical Indo-Pacific area, various species of cubozoa can be found in various regions as far as the Mediterranean Sea, Japan, California, South Africa or New Zealand. 
According to some studies, the marine industry promotes the cubozoa’s expansion because they used to cling on the underside of the boats or to be drawn by the ballast water before getting rejected in another part of the world. This phenomenon, combined with an extremely effective defense system, can explain the abundance of cubozoans despite climate change.

For this second episode of Chimaera for Lyl Radio, we invited a dear Milano Artist, Atoloï. his productions and mixes search for other depths, in which the listener can get lost in a dense "no boundaries" journey between the worlds of dance and meditation.

"When i started thinking about the way i could build this mix i had a completely different idea of it in my mind, in fact, i was planning to create a deep and fast-paced broken beat mix, like a continuous flow of rhythms directly polarized to the body. After actually starting, things took a completely different route, leading me to go search in that gap that links the mind to the physical world, the whole process of losing ourselves to search for a higher state as a Sufi that dances in a full trance. So, as an ecstatic experience, the mix grows slowly from a dreamy and crystal clear ambiance to deep and gritty sonorities, reaching its clue point with rattling percussion and cutting the silence with twisted rhythmic patterns. That fair of sounds won’t last much and just right after touching the peak, it will come back to nothing, concluding the mix without any kind of goodbyes."

But for this episode, Skalm (@dans-market) has made a different kind of interaction and invited Utrecht-based Luke Cohlen (@lukecohlen) to create his version of interface. It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing to fit the patriarchal neoliberalist mould, we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Regardless of one’s point of reference, we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

For this episode of Transience we have invited research musician and composer, Demetrio Cecchitelli @cecchitellidemetrio, to create an hour of anxiety alleviating music. Demetrio is mainly active in the fields of ambient and electroacoustic music, with a focused interest for active and deep listening to his compositional approaches. Released worldwide on numerous record labels across Europe, United States/North America, Russia and Japan. He has the follwoing to say about the piece he created ~ While doing this mix for Transience I was wondering to rediscover hidden states of relief within the listening experiences I had in the last ten years. A will to recreate a soft and comfortable zone, where the listener can dive at its leisure, moved by gentle textures and profound/emotional harmonies.

ǝɯǝɐ is the musical exploring project of the musician from island of Mallorca (Balearic Islands), Miquel Alzanillas. 

His deep interest in technology and avant-garde music inspired him to start producing and DJing at a young age. Since then, he has collaborated on various interdisciplinary projects, both in live performances and sound installations as well as in sound design for audiovisual projects. Currently, he combines ǝɯǝɐ project with designing and developing code for various Python applications.

Since his last release in 2019, he has been working on various audiovisual projects, both in sound design for advertising campaigns and scoring for a feature film.

Now, with his second album, ǝɯǝɐ is set to push his own limits even further, seeking a more digital and processed sound through landscapes that evoke science fiction in a dystopian future.

As a devotee of nature, Atoloi explores sound creating a mellow amalgam of layers using echoing synths, processed field recordings, and self-created samples; all mixed in a lysergic experience of heavy-grained noises and evocative instrumental compositions.

Micaela Casella aka E L A is an Argentinian DJ based in Milan. She began her musical journey in 2011 in Córdoba. Returning to her hometown Buenos Aires a few years later gave her the opportunity to get more deeply involved with her beloved Techno through the “Arjaus” School of Electronic Music.
E L A captures ambient soundscapes and subtle grooves full of surprising change. The psychedelic nuances in his selection constantly create innovative atmospheres. Her hypnotic sounds, inviting rhythms and timely transitions define her.

Grand River and Sofie Birch are set to unveil their collaborative EP, titled "Our Circadian," on November 24, through Melantónia.

The two-track release follows Grand River's final release under the now-discontinued Editions Mego label earlier this year, and Sofie Birch's two solo albums from 2022. Our Circadian represents the second collaborative release on Melantónia, a platform founded by Hanna Maria & Mattia Onori in 2021, dedicated to music for non-dance environments, featuring early contributions from artists like Polygonia, Plants Army Revolver, and Melantónia co-founders Hanna Maria & Mattia Onori themselves, amongst others.

"Our Circadian" was conceived remotely in 2021 during the lockdown, with the aim of encapsulating two distinct moments of those days - early morning and late afternoon - along with their subtle emotional nuances. The first track of the release - 7PM - conveys dreamy atmospheres that flow into colorful rhythms, recalling the electroacoustic nature of the label’s melancholic sounds. The gloomier 3AM, on the other side of a 7“ record, offers a timeless introspection of a gently intensifying synth sound’s fling.

Grand River, a composer and sound designer, brings her background in linguistics to her work. She draws inspiration from minimalism and ambient music, resulting in atmospheric and rhythmically intricate compositions. Her artistic pursuits traverse the realms of art and electronic music, exploring forms of communication that transcend language, often influenced by nature, scale, and movement. Grand River's impressive portfolio includes sound installations at 4DSOUND/Monom and Terraforma's Il Pianeta, as well as performances at prestigious venues like Barbican, Rewire, MUTEK, Le Guess Who?, CTM, Draaimolen, and Atonal's Kraftwerk. She has also worked on remixes for notable acts like Tangerine Dream. Since 2016, she has curated the label One Instrument, offering a unique creative challenge to artists: creating music using only a single instrument.

Sofie Birch, a celebrated sound artist and producer, is known for her lush ambient releases, art installations, live performances, DJ sets, and her NTS series "Ambient Abracadabra." Her sonic creations can manipulate space, infuse it with a profound sense of calm, and invite listeners to engage in meditation and introspection through the healing qualities of sound and vibrations. Her music acts as a conduit for understanding the complexities of the mind and body through artistic expression, characterized by a distinct emphasis on stillness, suspension, and sustain. Sofie's soundscapes open gateways to dream-like states of perception and heightened presence, providing a transcendental journey into an alchemical biosphere. Her extensive repertoire includes performances at renowned events such as Barbican, Roskilde Festival, MUTEK, Unsound, CTM, Rewire, Monom, and Terraforma, as well as award-winning compositions for VR experiences and animated films, in collaboration with artists like Baum & Leahy and animation director Pernille Kjaer.

As Our Circadian takes its final form, it promises a narrative of resilience, creativity, and the indomitable human spirit guided by the artistic mastery of Grand River and Sofie Birch.
