Favorite Creations

This is a playlist of my video game related music.

The first track, "SolTera Theme Song" is the theme song for an upcoming post-apoc, crafting, voxel-based FPS I'm working on through Myth Tech Studios: www.mythtechstudios.com

The next two tracks are part of a full soundtrack I'm composing for a non-existent, modern, indie-style game, inspired heavily by Darren Korb's soundtrack for the game, Bastion ("Somber Souls..." is in progress).

The fourth track, "Sick Game," is a game-nostalgia-metal tune for which I wrote the lyrics and composed & produced the vocals. The composer of the music and I are planning to produce a full song based on this short tune.

The next five tracks are all 8-bit NES-style chiptunes; The track, "Mötæ - Shutter..." is an 8-bit, note-for-note replication of a tune by a band with which I formerly sang and composed. The other four songs are original compositions intended to convey different classic game styles.

"Super Mario Chipstep" was the first song I wrote in FL Studio after about a decade of being away from electronic music production. The focus was on trying to learn a bit about NI's Massive while having fun sampling from Super Mario Bros.

Wakeless

New Bass Day! I finally got myself my own bass, a Yamaha TRBX 305 and I thought I'd make a wee clip to test it out. I'm also using my Ibanez RG8 for this clip.

My friend and musical colleague The Panpsychist (Cody Richards) sent me an instrumental track he had started working on. I was so inspired by it that I stayed up all night writing and recording vocals for it. Here's what it sounds like in its current state. The drummer from motae will be joining us on this piece and laying drums for it soon as well.

So I've been wanting to try out Vocaloid on something, and I've had this vocal melody in my head for a while. I used Hatsune Miku for the Japanese, and IA for the English. The lyrics don't really mean anything because lolidon'tknownipponese:

I met Dutch musician Tijmen Riedé during a trip to the Netherlands a few years ago. He wrote an electronic interlude track called "Reflections" for an album I produced in 2012 with my band, mötæ (motae.bandcamp.com). Tijmen sent me "2210" while I was living in China last year, and it was so exciting that I wrote and recorded vocals for it the night he sent it to me. I just now got around to mixing it and posting it, so here it finally is!

LYRICS:

A little less then three years ago the political situation in many countries of the Arab world changed dramatically. Uprisings started in rural areas of Tunisia and from there spread to various countries in the region. Millions gathered in the streets united by their demand for more democracy, rights and participation in the political process. In most cases the reaction of the governing dictators were relentless and severe towards every form of protests. Violence in the streets of Cairo, Tunis and Bengasi escalated and resulted in the overthrow of the governments in Tunisia, Egypt and Lybia.
A year later a group of female singers and musicians from Tunisia (Nawel Ben Kraiem, Badiaa Bouhrizi, Medusa, Houwaida), Libya (Nada) and Egypt (Donia Massoud, Maryam Saleh, Youssra El Hawary) met in Mohsen Matri Studio in Tunis to sing- against corruption, despotism, patronization and narrow-mindedness. The song with Syrian artist Rasha Rizk was recorded some months later in her political asylum in Cairo. Sudanese/American producer Oddisee and Olof Dreijer of the Swedish pop duo The Knife joined the session, participating in the creation of the musical backdrop as well as the often multi-instrumentalist female singers. For the vinyl edition producers such as Brenk, Blackjoy and Blundetto contributed remix versions of the project.

"Sawtuha" (Arabic for "her voice"), the album that is the product of the 2-week session, is a vital encouraging testament of rebellion against the repression of democratic rights, gender inequality, and lack of inclusion. The music is an organic mixture of traditional Arabic music, regional influences and various forms of contemporary Western musical genres. A mixture that may sound contradicting at first but makes total sense once you listen to the music.

The studio session was organized by the Berlin based NGO MICT (Media In Cooperation And Transition) and was funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.

My mother always jokes that I got my musical talent from her because she taught me how to play the Batman theme song on the guitar when I was a kid. But whether that's what inspired me to become a musician isn't what matters - the support I was given to do what I wanted to do, regardless of the practicality of my endeavors, is what allowed me to pursue this creative life. So, since it's my mom's birthday today, I thought I'd customize the Batman song she taught me so many years ago as a gift back to her. Happy birthday, mom!
