Ma fille quand elle avait 20 ans a passé 2 mois en hôpital psychiatrique . Les paroles de la chanson sont le reflet de ce dont elle se souvient et notre ressenti quand on allait la voir . Philippe a su retranscrire en musique toutes les étapes psychologiques par lesquelles elle et nous , ses parents sommes passés. Merci à Thibault pour les passages en anglais qui apportent une intensité incroyable au titre .  
My 20-year-old daughter spent 2 months in a psychiatric hospital. The song's lyrics reflect what she remembers and how we felt when we went to see her. Philippe was able to transcribe into music all the psychological stages she and we, her parents, went through. Thanks to Thibault for the English passages, which bring an incredible intensity to the track.

I Start At The End

A simple, rather loose, jazz ensemble, and a simple message.
It seems as though the social and political turbulence is much like trying to paddle your own canoe - it's going to get rough and it will feel as though hope is lost, but don't stop and don't despair. Hope Floats.

The song was originally intended as a relationship muse, where two people are supposed to be paddling, together, in the same direction, but the boat keeps turning 'round and 'round. It takes courage to realize you can only control your own paddle and how you use it. It can be overwhelming and daunting, at times, and you may be inclined to abandon ship: don't.

This song began when Joe, feeling a bit nostalgic, wrote the lyrics and composed it on his acoustic guitar. He recorded it and sang it with expert harmonies, then decided to share it with Eclectic Collective. We were all very excited to get work on our second song with Joe, as we all admire his songwriting.

  First up was Tez this time, oddly enough. He was able to identify all the fill spots and light up the solo without the rest of us even adding anything yet. Next came Ken, who usually goes first, adding his steady grooving drums and tasty percussion. Once the drums were down, Josh completed the rhythm section by adding his fretted bass. He also worked out an organ part to give the whole sound a bit of thickness. Also adding some thickness and texture, Stephen added a clean electric rhythm part, as well. 

  Once we had it in can we asked Stephen to mix and produce it for us, which he did in his always expert fashion. 

  This, as mentioned, is Eclectic Collective's second song with Joe, and we all enjoyed bringing it to life with him. He's a wonderful collaborator and an all around good dude. Do yourself a favor and go check out his page, which is rich in great songs. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.

The third in this set of Bandcamp EPs finds Honey Smugglers at Bark Studio in Walthamstow in the Autumn of 1990 during initial sessions for a follow up to the `Listen' EP. As it turns out we recorded a different set of songs for the `Closer' EP in early 1991.

Each of the first three songs were longstanding stage favourites and could be heard in most Smugglers setlists. `Anybody But You' embodies the Smugglers groove as well as any of their tunes and check out the spontaneous studio magic as Steve kick starts the piece on an Organ with a mind of its own.

`Pie In The Sky' appeared in live form on an album recorded at The Sausage Machine in Hampstead, (`Now That's Disgusting Music') but this is the studio version. In a gigging situation we used to see how long we could extend the gap in the middle before people would start clapping, but here....just an uneasy, digital silence.

`Beautiful People' was played in a number of arrangements throughout the band's career, this perhaps being the best and most concise. The improvised vocal coda at the end by Chris assures this version's place as first choice. It was a first take vocal.

The final track `Whole Wide World' was a unique cover version which was only ever played this once. It was part of a planned Fiction Records sampler which never happened. It didn't even cross our minds to play it live, great song though it is, I guess we had too many of our own songs vying for position in a setlist of ten.
