1st generation Australian. Born 1971. Dutch Mother / English Father (which has influenced his music between UK breakbeat and Euro hardcore)
Rikochet began his DJing career at age 20 in the fresh and very underground 1991 Rave era. At the time, he was in the Australian Navy, which is how his earlier Dj pseudonym Popeye was created. Popeye’s first set launched at the legendary O’Mallys Hotel, Sunday recovery parties in Brougham St, Kings Cross, Sydney. Playing all styles of dance music from House, Trance, Rave, Hardcore, Breakbeat and Jungle. He became part of Sydney’s Rave and Breakbeat culture. DJing at various venues all around Sydney’s Clubs, Pubs and Warehouses, he become well known for his piano breakbeat and driving bass line style morning sets. With the release of the very popular, Junglistic Rowdiness and N4CER tape series in 94/94, Popeye’s sound was in demand.

During his early Rave career, Popeye played alongside Carl Cox, Slipmatt and many great Australian DJ’s. As a DJ competition panel judge, he also played numerous radio shows and was a columnist on the topic of Breakbeat and Jungle in the 90’s Rave journal, Juicy Red Apple & UK’s "Knowledge" magazine.

As a JMA founding member, Popeye was instrumental in championing the new cutting-edge sound of Jungle / Drum n Bass to Sydney through his various (and highly collectible) mix tapes. After the release of the JMA tapes (Vol 1. Jungle Massive Australia) in 1995, and a booking at Sydney’s Big Day Out festival (1997), Popeye changed names to Rikochet, and became the first Australian DJ to play Triple JJJ’s Mixup national radio 3 times, lagging only Carl Cox.
Since then, Rikochet has played alongside some of the most influential DJ’s and producers of the D&B community, such as Moving Shadow’s Rob Playford, Grooverider, Ratty, DJ SS, Kenny Ken, Dr S. Gachet, Chemistry & Storm, Klute and DJ Rap with MC Fearless to name a few.

After moving to Santa Barbara in 2015, Rikochet has played numerous gigs in LA, including multiple collabs with the 13 Crows Radio crew , DJ Binz & Jonny 5 and more recently with the local SB Jungle cats
33 years on, Rikochet now lives in California where he spends his free time balancing between a passion for Drum & Bass, Breaks & loads of old skool Jungle Techno, with a vinyl collection to die for.

CODELP002 - Various Artists - Look To The Future Volume 2 (Out 05/07/24)

Recorded live at Wire's last-ever DNB party, this set is pretty special to me. As a home for the best underground music in Leeds, this little basement has been the epicentre of Leeds' drum and bass history. Host to D.O.P.E in the club's earlier guise as Cafe Mex during the late 90s, it even broadcast legendary sets live on Radio 1's 1 in the Jungle show. It was the birthplace of Ant TC1's legendary Momentum sessions during its time as Think Tank, before undergoing its makeover into Wire where it welcomed Central Beatz, Radio Frequency, Overflow and many many more well-loved parties during the early days of dubstep, via UK Funky, Bass music and the incredible Hessle Audio and Rufige shows - with too many names and nights to mention, Wire will always be an unforgettable space. 

I had the great privilege of opening the night, with an hour-long set celebrating Momentum, where I formed lifelong friendships and built my career from having fun with like-minded people dancing to great music. 

I selected some of my fave soulful dnb tunes from the period, with special mention and solid inspiration from 3rd Generation Digital and MC JC, who would always open proceedings with showcases of the burgeoning golden era of liquid drum and Bass

Presenting an hour of massive tunes that I wouldn't usually combine, mixed with wide-eyed enthusiasm and love, interrupted by so many old faces invading the booth to say hi and share their excitement, that you might have to excuse the odd mix left in too long or cut out too quickly. It was such an emotional evening, as you might be able to pick up from the crowd noise still present on the mic. With a dancefloor full of proper heads, ready to go from early and even an unexpected reload before 11pm! Big shouts to my sparring partner LD for hosting and everyone who came down early to make it the night it was. 

A huge thanks to everyone who ever worked in, partied at, promoted a night or simply lost themselves to the music at our favourite space, Wire.
