Inspiration:
this entire track was inspired by the source of the audio sample - the BBC archive, and an 1969 look at their Radiophonic Workshop. It's amazing to think how far we've come. There's also heavy use of Ableton's spectral resonator device, which is just mental for creating vocoder, and totally new sounds. The main pads here are a spectral resonated sample of Indian singing..

This track's challenge:
I've gone for a triplet time for this track, i think it gives it a more happy skippy feel, without the need for adding groove or swing to anything. It's also the first complete track I've made in triplets, which was a challenge getting to grips with triplet timing in arpeggiators, delays, and arrangement.

I have specifically chosen not to use crashes, cymbals, risers, or other such effects on this track. An experiment on whether it's still possible to get the flow of energy in to the music without those things. 

Sound design:
I've also chosen not to synthesise bass again on this track. Instead fishing out 5 or 6 samples and loops from loopcloud, and then chopping them up, converting them in sampler racks, and rearranging. I find bass synthesis a drain on energy, and found sounds usually sound better anyway. But it does limit the range of notes that can be used, which makes me want to get a Steinberg Backbone license, since it's great at resynthesizing from samples.

Most synth sounds here are, however, originals. Some are made from scratch, others are presets or tutorial patches that have been tweaked and layered. I'm particularly happy with the main synth sound and how the layering and stereo field reminds me so much of shpongle's early tracks.

matering:
this still needs some EQ work, but that's a thing I'm almost never 100% happy with - I'd say it's 90% of the way there, and sounds good across the devices I've tried it on, even in the car. However, I can see from the wave form there's not a consistent loudness, so that also needs working out, but for a first pass it will do.

production notes:
This started out with a narrative I wrote for the track about a lone figure that awoke without memory in a cave that appeared to be sentient, and inhabited ravers entranced by strange relics. The usual psychedelic trope stuff. I recorded the vocals myself, and used them to inform the initial arrangement of the track. It became evident that the story would result in a evolving and winding musical expedition. However, my voice really didn't suit it. So I used elevenlabs to generate a new AI version of the vocals - that are used here. Later I stripped most of the vocals out, however the story they informed is now the song.

Each track I make offers new challenges.. here I really wanted to shift genres and sounds a lot. It sounds quite basic, but there's a lot going on here from a bassline that absolutely isn't traditional psytrance (although the base pattern is inspired by "Robotoised" by Quirk), to shifting from saw bass, to square wave, to switching the whole thing up in to a Brazil-inspired shponglised breakdown - considering I had no knowledge of this musical style, let alone how to produce it. However the real challenge was finishing this track. The arrangement has been 'complete' for months now with me tweaking and trying to polish it up enough to release it. 

I also decided to make this a multi-part song. Again, inspired by Shpongle albums where tracks eb and flow between each other. Part 2 of this isn't included here, but I hope I can make it become a full mixed album. Something for later.

production notes:
As I continue to learn it's almost impossible to believe that I rarely use compressors, both to tame harsh volume changes or transients, as well as to side chain against other elements. This track was to properly get me thinking about compressors, side chaining, and above all else fast production. My prior tracks have taken many months to tweak and nudge in the direction of finality, but this track is completed within weeks. The only way to learn and improve is to impose constraints! I've also set about finally dealing with sub sub bass... the bass below the fundamental which constantly causes me problems. Hopefully this has a much cleaner low end on very powerful systems!

Goa and psychedelic trance oldskool and nu cool mixes for days!

English hobbyist DJ and psytrance producer, his head in the clouds and his ears in the psychedelic back allies of the past. Decades ago jrb deejayed with tactile formats - vinyl, CD, mixing desks, now it's all done in software. Not live, non-destructive, remastered and spliced to high heaven. Earlier still jrb made music with the primitive fasttracker2 software music software for the PC, and ran music groups OnyxTrance (nxt), Blackhole (bh) as well as releasing for other internet module labels, such as Chill, Twist, and LoK. In between he released a few bootlegs (mixing vocals from one track with the backing from another track, with often hilarious results).
