The benefits of large amounts of homework

Homework is part of almost every academic program, but is it really as useful as people
think? Most classes require that students do some amount of homework as part of their learning
process, but also to demonstrate to their teachers that they have actually studied and learned the
material taught in class. It is also believed that there is correlation between the amount of
homework students do and the scores they achieve in standardized tests. Increased amounts of
homework may actually not be that beneficial for students’ overall development, and may not
significantly improve students’ test scores, therefore, students should not be given excessive
home work (e.g. more than six hours per day).
Although it is generally believed that more homework helps students’ academic
development, the evidence is not 100% conclusive. In fact, “there are mixed findings about
whether homework actually increases students’ academic achievement” [Brian Haley].
Homework assignments are “most helpful if they are carefully planned by the teachers” [Brian
Haley], which is not always the case. As a result, more homework may sometimes provide
benefit to the student, but that is not guaranteed unless it is planned carefully.
Furthermore, it is not clear whether increased hours spent on homework has a direct
impact on test scores. In fact, research does not provide strong evidence that large amounts of
homework benefits students. “There does seem to be a correlation between homework and
standardized test scores, but it isn’t strong” [Alfie Kohn]. This is also demonstrated by available
data on NAEP reading scale scores by age and amount of assigned daily reading homework.
