2015 Collaborations

Here's a recent collection of tunes I have had the pleasure of recording with Germany's superb bassist Mirko Borach - aka, Stringburner https://soundcloud.com/stringburner 

Mirko is a deep funk player, always in the pocket, and has an extraordinary sense of rhythm that he demonstrates with his playing and soloing.   His solos on Sco-Mule and Sharing the Way especially show his command and artistry.   In addition to these tunes, Mirko has recorded with a number of other top electric guitarists here on SoundCloud, including Dan van den Berg.   Enjoy these tunes, which also feature guitarists Justin Valente and Ned Bolle, keyboardists Julien Apelian and Calaminus, and flute and sax player Santi-Caballero Mendez.

Stretching It Out With Stringburner - Mirko Borach

DanArchX.  Dan is simply a remarkable talent.  Well known here among my friends on SoundCloud, Dan's musicianship is at the very highest level.  Both a brilliant acoustic and electric guitarist, Dan brings his A game to everything he touches, raising the bar for everyone, and creating excitement and thrills at every turn.  

Dan does this all for fun, as he is also one of Holland's top architects, and the creativity and sensitivity he brings to those works and designs complements what he brings to music here.  Technical ability in spades, a superb sense of rhythm, a truly gifted composer, a master recording engineer and a flair for the dramatic.  It just doesn't get more exiting here.

Take a look at Dan's growing gallery - his love and mastery for Spanish Flamenco guitar, and his ability to use a combination of sensitivity and energy to amaze.  

The pieces here I have done with Dan take us back to my favorite fusions musicians and groups - bands like Return To Forever, Miles Davis, The Mahavishnu Orchestra...the true pioneers and leaders who combined jazz and rock.  And Dan keeps up with these guys.  

Many of you have listened already to these tunes and offered such positive words.  Please give them a listen again if you have the time, and head back into Dan's gallery as well, where he has far more music.

aKu - Not a Dream (Feat. DMiBeats)

We had a blast pulling this together.  Its a simple blues/gospel riff on organ in F, that sets up some wonderful opportunities for heavy jams over the top by Justin and Tom, two of the finest blues players I have ever recorded with.  Tom has the solos with a more treble sound, and Justin boosts his midrange and bass.  Check out their SoundCloud pages if you are not familiar.  They are bad ass, just like this tune. Bad Ass Blues - with Justin Valente and Tom Adams / guitars

What fun pulling this together with three serious musicians.  You probably know Joe Bongiovanni and Justin Valente's awesome blues oriented guitars, and they stretch out here on this funk / soul / fusion groove.  Burning it up they are.  And joining us on Alto Sax is recording artist Matt Criscuolo.  Look for him at mattcriscuolo.com.  These guys just play their ass off here.  Started with an internet fusion loop, I added many keyboard lines to funk it up to the max, and we added these pros.  Joe takes the opening solos for the first four minutes, Justin follows, and we finish with all the guys trading off.  So much energy.  Positive energy here.  Put this on and relax. Funk And Burn - With Joe Bongiovanni and Justin Valente guitars and Matt Criscuolo alto sax

This was something special! This track is a collaboration between Daniel van den Berg aka Danarchx on guitars and Jamie Rhind on Organ, strings synth and bass Synth. We aimed for a kind of Deep Durple meets Al Di Meola meets Yngwie kind of thing. It was cool and courageous of Jamie trying on a loud rock/metal piece but the result is... Well you judge!

Drag Racers on the Spanish Highway - Part 1 - Featuring Jamie Rhind

Dan van den Berg steals the show here on a Miles type modal groove, while breaking a high E string in the process.  See if you can find where:)  A special tune for us to toast Miles like this.  From the late 60s on Miles always had one or two super serious fusion guitar players on stage with him - John McLaughlin, Pete Cosey, Mike Stern, Barry Finnerty, John Scofield, Robin Ford and Foley. Shady

After the Race there are the tumbling weeds carried by the wind flying by, rolling on the highway. This is part 2 of the Drager Dracers on the Spanish Highway, with the marvelous allround musician and keyboard master extra-ordinaire Jamie Rhind.
The track has the same basic structure of harmonics and melody but taken a pace down to let it sing and linger. Hope you like our second escapade on the Spanish Highway!

Birdland was written by keyboardist Joe Zawinul of Weather Report. The piece made its debut on Weather Report’s 1977 studio album, Heavy Weather.

Such a pleasure to have Norway's brilliant guitarist Ronny Heimdal  https://soundcloud.com/ronny-heimdal join me again, this time on Purple Mountain.  Ronny's playing and creativity is world class, and he makes this heavy modal fusion original come to life with his listening, note selection and phrasing, interaction with my synth lines, and finally his engineering abilities.  My deepest appreciation goes out to him for jumping in to help us climb the Purple Mountain together.   

This photo is of the stunning Norwegian fjords, a magical place that I am looking forward to exploring someday.

Purple Mountain - with Ronny Heimdal / Electric Guitar

Gotta love the open invitation from Scotland's finest SC guitarist, fuzzmaster and executive chef Ian Tait https://soundcloud.com/ian-tait to join him on this heavy funk rocker.  Ian's signature funky sound and outstanding Wah playing were just what the doctor ordered for me, so I jumped in with some heavy synth guitar patch to try and match Ian's electricity on my keyboard.  On this track I take the first and third solos.  Damn this was fun Ian!!!  You are back with a vengeance.

Funky Strat Strut - with Ian Tait / guitar

Here's an original Latin Jazz groove that includes the very fine Spanish flutist Santi-Caballero Mendez https://soundcloud.com/santi-caballero and German bassist Mirko Borach (Stringburner) https://soundcloud.com/stringburner.  Wrote this tune with kind of a Santana groove, and think you will love what Santi-Caballero does with his gorgeous flute playing.  I have the trombone patch solos.  Route 251 is named after the classic II-V-I chord changes around which the tune is built. At the beginning, Jamie and I wanted to create a jam session with 3 keyboardists. We started the track with Calaminus at the organ solo, Jamie at the trombone patch and me at the electric piano. Later, Mirko "StringBurner" joined us on the bass, bring us beautiful bass arrangements and an outstanding solo. Thanks to Mirko and thanks to Jamie Rhind & Calaminus  for their amazing keyboards solos.

Sharing The Way - feat. Jamie Rhind - Calaminus & StringBurner

The brilliant Dan van den Berg https://soundcloud.com/danarchx and I are thrilled to share a tribute to two of our favorite bands, The Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever.  These seminal bands and their musicians were so important to the merging of rock and jazz, many having come out of Miles Davis' fusion band, and featured virtuoso soloists and creativity that had not been seen before with electric music.  Dan here plays both electric and acoustic guitars, and has added so very much of himself to this modal tune.  The tune features a repeating simple lick, with dueling aggressive synth and guitar solos that these bands pioneered and took to a very high level, with John McLaughlin and Al DiMiola on guitars and Jan Hammer and Chick Corea on keyboards. Mahafusionu - with Dan van den Berg / guitars

Excited to release Spring Blossom, an original jazz tune with three of the very finest true jazz players on SC.   I have known Alan for a decade, having worked and played with him here in New York.  He's a world class digital marketing professional, superb and highly educated musician, collector of extraordinary guitars, and created the melody here for Spring Blossom.  Santi-Caballero Mendez is a wonderful multi-instrumentalist from Barcelona, and plays saxophones and flute with both ease and taste.  Santi opens the tune up on alto saxophone.   This is my first collaboration with Manuel, who is from the island of Sardinia, Italy.  Manuel is a superb bass player, and performs here on his fretless 6 string - an instrument I am certain Alan would love to get his hands on:).  Despite being born with a handicap to his right hand, Manuel has overcome this hurdle to create and play remarkable jazz and fusion bass lines and music, in addition to drums.  I'm looking forward to doing some very electric fusion tunes with him too, as his understanding of bass and rhythm is simply stunning.  Straordinario.

Big Al's Blues - with Alan Schulman / Guitar

This one is quite a crazy funky fusion track! A great bass player Mirko Borach aka Stringburner(https://soundcloud.com/stringburner )came up with the idea to cover this track by Los Lobotomys, a fusion group that was formed by Steve Lukather in 1989 with some of his friends and talented players, like David Garfield.
Mirko asked Jamie Rhind (https://soundcloud.com/jamie-rhind) and me to join on this one to complete the blend. Jamie brought his Miles' oriented synths, I brought my loud and funk rhythm guitars. We reworked the original, added different sounds and flavours to it, turning it into "Entanglement".  All of us have one solo spot around the main theme. Quite interesting is the turn of events with a more quiet interlude after the guitar solo, something we just had to keep in from the original.

Anyways! We hope to entertain you with this cover of a great fusion track and band. Do check them out if you don't know them already! Los Lobotomys...

Entanglement (cover) - feat. Mirko Borach | Jamie Rhind | Dan van den Berg

Here's another collaboration just packed with funk and great players from around the world.  Represented on this tune are musicians from Germany, Spain, Scotland, France and the US (3).  Pretty sure you will enjoy this one.  It's an original funk fusion tune that lets everyone here stretch it out a bit.  Germany's Mirko Borach (Stringburner) holds down the deep groove on bass, with Barcelona's multi horn player Santi-Caballero Mendez creating the head.  Solos from Mike "Land of Orz" Orzek with a fuzzed out wah guitar, Santi-Caballero smoothing it down on sax, Scotland's finest Ian Tait bringing it back up again with his signature electric funk guitar playing, France's wonderful keyboardist Julien Apelian on a great synth patch, and then New Jersey's fine jazz guitarist Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski bringing it home with his serious Scofield funk guitar style.  Wow.  So much playing here.  Great job guys!

For those of you who haven't discovered Orlando "The Don" Lund, here's your opportunity.  Orlando is a serious pro, having built a career as a writer, multi instrumentalist and producer in London during the '90s Soul Funk era, leading and creating with some of the finest contemporary jazz and funk musicians in Europe. Orlando approached me about playing on a tune I had released here, What the Funk, quickly sending 5 tasty tracks to me - a solid grooving bass line, a congas line, two rhythm guitar tracks and a George Benson style guitar solo.  I've worked them all in here, adding them to all my keyboard parts, creating some sweet soul jazz for your listening pleasure. What The Funk - with Orlando "The Don" Lund

Here's a classic jazz standard A Foggy Day.  A Foggy Day was composed by George Gershwin, with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, and introduced by Fred Astaire in the 1937 film A Damsel in Distress. Never saw the movie but the beautiful tune has stuck with me for a long time.  It was originally titled "A Foggy Day (In London Town)" in reference to the pollution-induced pea soup fogs that were common in London during that period, and is often still referred to by the full title.  So many greats have recorded this, including Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, George Benson and even David Bowie.

This recording was all done on keyboards.

Here's an original reggae tune brought to life by three very fine musicians, Alpha Roots on guitar, Julien Apelian on keyboards and piano and Ian Greaves on vocals.  Alphio is so deeply rooted in serious reggae, and brought his great understanding and love to his riddim guitar work.  Julien as always has contributed sweet playing and ideas with two keyboard tracks and also the two fine synth solos.  And Milwaukee's Ian Greaves's sweet lyrics and vocals tell the story.    

Love how these guys each contribute to the overall sound and conception.

A Positive Mind

Nothing like the thrills of the '70s Muscle Cars.   How 'bout a '72 Camero...

'72 Camero

1971 was an important time in music, where electricity was changing the landscape and Rock, Funk, Soul and Jazz were all merging into psychedelic grooves.  Marshal stacks were often taller than the players, the players were higher than the Marshal stacks, Strats and Les Pauls were the axes of choice, Hammond B3 Organs and Fender Rhodes keyboards could compete for volume with the guitars, and the hair was even longer than the jams.   Woodstock was a recent memory, Jimi Hendrix had just passed but had moved into the funk and soul inspired Band of Gypsies period, Sly & The Family Stone was heating it up with heavy funk and soul inspired grooves, and Miles Davis had just released the seminal Bitches Brew fusion double album that literally changed music.  This was where it was at, with each of these musicians and bands being influenced by each other.  Great stuff that produced legendary sessions and recordings and pushed music forward with power, energy, groove and volume.  

1971 commemorates this time and mindset, and recreates the feel with friends from around the world who continuously exhibit this spirit, energy and hair in their playing:

A couple of words on each of the players:  ALPHA ROOTS - Alphio was the perfect choice to add his soulful African djembe percussion voice.  One of the most prolific and inclusive musicians here on SoundCloud, always speaking with a positive voice.  Check out his often reggae and dub inspired recordings.  RICKARD FROM - my favorite B3 player here on SoundCloud.  We haven't recorded before but wanted his beautiful sound and also wanted these other heavy cats to be introduced to his Jimmy Smith type playing.  STEPHEN "PINNER" LIPINSKI - one of the hottest jazz fusion guitarists on SoundCloud, bringing more modern Scofieldesque jazz lines and harmonies to 1971.  SCOTT NELSON - another burning jazz and fusion guitarist, Scott sound combines elements of the contemporary guitar masters - Scofield, Metheny and Martino - to create his extraordinary playing.  MARCO OVERSTEEGEN - no one on SC has a closer overall sound to Hendrix, and we needed Marco's fabulous rhythm playing and soloing to anchor this 1971 mood.  JUSTIN VALENTE - Justin's my favorite blues rock guitarist, and just had to be a part of this summit, bringing us that heavy electric sound of Jimi, The Allman Bros, Freddie King and Stevie Ray Vaughn.  

So here's 1971.  Again.

For this special occasion, the ever evolving label has put together a comprehensive 24 track quadruple vinyl, triple CD and vast digital compilation, due for release 8th July 2016. 

We're bringing you an exclusive listen to the whole thing right now. Featuring the likes of Bicep, Midland, Huxley and Marquis Hawkes, it's a veritable who's who of top tier house talent.

Memory Lane is a classic by Minnie Riperton who was stricken with cancer and passed at a very earlier. 

This is one of my favorite songs, so I feel honored to be able to cover it. Roger helped me by spicing up the music with his awesome guitar skills. Thank you Roger B-train and thank you Ver2xif for the wonderful production.
