For many of us at Mason Jar Music, the music of the 1990s was the backdrop to our coming of age. It was our introduction to pop culture and the soundtrack to our middle school dances. This year, continuing our annual Decoration Day cover series, we've asked a few of our favorite local Brooklyn artists to re-imagine a 1990s song of their choosing. Together with the Mason Jar Music House Band, we've crafted this humble homage to a few of the great turn-of-the-century artists, including Smashing Pumpkins, Macy Gray, Cher and Lauryn Hill. 

The Decoration Day series began on a whim three years ago after a last minute studio cancellation inspired co-founders Dan Knobler & Jon Seale to record an EP of some their favorite songs. In what has become a celebrated Mason Jar Music tradition, the collective unites friends and collaborators for one weekend each spring to record a group of themed cover songs to be released around Memorial Day.

A story of hearing purpose where nothing should be: old TV snow whispering like far letters, dust on a lens turning into a map, a kitchen clock and hallway hum echoing the night sky. Breath becomes a countdown without numbers, and in that hush a name returns from the dark. This is a love told in negative space—belonging found between pulses, a door in the quiet swinging open. “In the sound between stars, I hear where you are.”

A lost rider and a singing companion are swept into the oldest story ever told.

After a desperate ride through a midnight storm, Buck Ramble and his faithful tenor companion arrive on the outskirts of Bethlehem just as the angel appears to the shepherds. They were never meant to be there—yet somehow they are. Their arrival shifts the story, and the angel turns to confront them. If they want the world to remain whole, they must remain and make it right.

What follows is a sacred western journey seen through the eyes of two men who never expected to witness a miracle. They follow the angel’s command to Jerusalem, where the Festival of Lights fills the Temple with fire and song. There, in the arms of an old man named Simeon, they behold the Child who would someday call Himself the Light of the World.

The encounter changes everything. They ride back not with answers but with peace—carrying a quiet flame that was never theirs to earn. The final songs are not about what happened, but what remains: light for the weary, mercy for the broken, and peace for every stranger still out on the road.

Part Christmas album, part biblical epic, part sacred western myth, Festival of Lights is the story of men who stumbled into prophecy by accident—and stayed long enough to be transformed.

Jules Ahoi is a singer/songwriter from Cologne, Germany. He wrote his first album "Between Lines" after he dropped out of university and moved to France, living in his old VW Van. Here he created his characteristical indiefolk-style which is often compared to early Ben Howard and Bon Iver records. With the release of the "Echoes" EP on his own founded record label MOON BLVD. Records, Jules Ahoi and his band hit the taste of a rapidly growing fanbased not only in Germany but worldwide. Between 2016 and 2019 the band played over 200 liveconcerts, with highlights like 4 shows on the 2019 edition of Reeperbahn Festival Hamburg and 17 sold out shows on their "Echoes Tour 2019". 
On June 12 Jules Ahoi released his first full length album "DEAR ____" which was featured e.g. in the German "Rolling Stone Magazin" and "SCHALL Magazin".
