In honour of marking 60 years of the Bristol Bus Boycott, First Bus have launched Drive For Change.

Over the coming months, Drive For Change will celebrate the purpose of the protest, the people who led it and the progress made since it defeated the colour bar.  This openly racist policy that discriminated against employing Blacks and Asians was defeated on the same day that Martin Luther King had a Dream. Its victory also led to the creation of the Race Relations Act 1965. 

As part of empowering and educating the passengers, whilst travelling on the bus they will be able to listen to a series of short ads and vox pops. This ad proudly celebrates Bristol's very first brave Black and Brown Bus Drivers. 

As part of the Drive For Change campaign there is also an open public design competition to wrap double-decker buses with the winner travelling  free for a year. To enter by midnight June 9th or for more info go to www.FirstBus.co.uk/DriveForChange.

The boycott against the Bristol Omnibus Company over its racist employment policy was the first black-led protest against racial discrimination in post-war Britain. We explored race relations in Bristol around the time of the boycott, and why its legacy continues to resonate so strongly today.

All wrapped up in a delibertely  cuturally appropriated reggae tinged bounce. "Cheers Drive!" , for  those outside the West Country & Wales, is the only grammatically  correct way to thank your bus driver when alighting at your stop. Everyone does that - right?!
