The fact we've fielded several mixes from Bristol-based artists and DJs over the duration of our podcast series thus far is a reflection of the city's enduring musical health. It's no coincidence that these mixes from Ekoplekz, Hodge, Ishan Sound, The Kelly Twins and Don't Be Afraid boss Semtek have been among our favourites in the series too. We can add to this list Rhythmic Theory, a man who has committed a wealth of sub-heavy material to local Bristol labels since first surfacing on Chris Farrell and Shanti Celeste's BRSTL back in 2012 with the Twilight Distinction 12".

Whilst his background remains something of a mystery, there can be no denying Rhythmic Theory's potency as a producer who channels the soundsystem heritage of Bristol into a brand of heavyweight corroded techno that sounds thoroughly fresh. Having recently inaugurated Berceuse Heroique offshoot Ancient Monarchy, this year will see a debut Rhythmic Theory album surface through Idle Hands whilst the producer also has material forthcoming on Blackest Ever Black's A14 series.

What better time to reach out for a mix from Rhythmic Theory then? Among the 72 odd minutes of music contained within his submitted selection you will find a rare airing of R&B, a studio collaboration between Rhythmic Theory and the perma-smiling Bruce, forthcoming Kowton, cuts from Joey Anderson and Omar S and hints of the aforementioned upcoming RT material for Idle Hands and A14. We also secured a somewhat rare round of questions and answers with Rhythmic Theory covering how he came to work with Bruce, what to expect from his upcoming debut album and the influence of jungle in his productions.

After 2 outings on recent SHOUTS compilations, Asa Tate lands on Rhythm Section Intl proper with a timeless EP - “ Replica”.
Asa Tate, fka Tech Support has been on a bit of a tear recently and this record feels like a real step up: a statement of intention aimed directly at the peak time dance floor.

A student of the Weatherall school of DJing, Asa Tate has showcased an astonishingly mature approach to production over the years that belies his age. You’d be forgiven for thinking these 4 tracks had been discovered from a dusty DAT tape, locked away in the vaults of a northern Italian club and rediscovered after 30 years….Listen more closely and you’ll notice the contemporary production flair and more recent influences that make this EP a perfect reinterpretation of the mid 90s house sound: sitting somewhere between dream house and Morales finest work under the red zone moniker.

The EP wastes no time in setting it’s intentions with the A1 Title Track, “Replica” - after a brief and floaty progressive house intro the refrain “ E-e-e-e-e-e-e-ECSTASY” echoes loudly over sampled vocals, euphorias piano chords, throbbing lead synths and a bouncy tech house bass line. It straddles so many sub genres of house without feeling derivative of any of them. Cliche’s and classic samples are embraced playfully and serve to contextualise and elevate the influences. This is not just really great house music or excellent storytelling, it’s art history.

“89” is a sultry deep house cut featuring rising Spanish star, Dariam Coco on Vocals. It floats like a butterfly, but stings like a bee, as the soft chords are interrupted with huge drum fills deftly transforming an after party jam to a peak time moment.

We continue to “ Unknowns” - a masterclass in building tension and holding it - this track simmers with restrained intensity for almost 6 minutes. It’s trademark Asa Tate production at its most understated and classy.

We round of the EP with the fittingly titled “Last Dance”, a wistful composition that brings us back down to earth slowly, safely and gently; always grooving but never pushing - this one is the soundtrack to the end of a long summer day and reaffirms Asa Tate’s claim to be a modern master of Deep House.

We’re super excited to give Ned the platform he deserves and look forward to hearing this one soundtrack many a dance as this long, beautiful summer draws to a close

One of contemporary boogie’s biggest grails finds its way back to Star Creature in a full cir-cle moment much larger than 7” in diameter. MIA made her debut for Mango Hill records with 2020’s heart-shaped Valentine’s debut “Something ‘ Bout Your Love”. Shortly after, the label put out a call for producers focusing on the boogie sound at the same time Toronto’s Gil Masuda was previewing some demos looking for vocalists. Star Creature’s Tim Zawada linked the two via IG and an anthem was born.

“Love Me Right” is back in print and properly situated on the A Side delivering that bedroom meets dancefloor tough but tender gangster groove grail sound. The B-Side let’s the freakier flag fly with “Creatures Of The Night” on the prowl. Channeling the lo-fi energy of an undis-covered grail, this basement boogie is ready for the main floor, prime time fierceness served raw.

Berlin-Hamburg duo Session Victim return to the ever-reliable Delusions Of Grandeur imprint with Chapter Two of their Sidequests trilogy, marking yet another high point in their almost twenty year journey through heartfelt, sample-rich music.  Overflowing with analog warmth, sun-drenched textures and irresistible grooves, the release also features a stellar remix from label co-founder and deep house pioneer Jimpster who kicks off the EP.

Here he takes Behind The Glass into spaced out house-not-house territory.  With crisp drum programming, trademark Rhodes, and subtle pads that build over time, his version delivers that late-night sophistication he's known for—steering the downtempo original in a clubbier direction without losing its blissed-out essence.

Up next we have a brand new collaborative effort with long time friend, label mate and fellow sample nerd Nebraska. Make It Happen is a dusty, slo-mo house groove featuring delicate keys, euphoric strings and that unmistakable sense of journey.  It’s just the kind of low-slung epic house they do best—intimate yet club-ready, nostalgic but never retro.

Flipping over, Too Soft To Be Loud, another collaboration with Viken Arman, follows with a jazzy, almost samba-esque rhythm and swirling atmospherics.  Loose percussion, catchy guitar riffs and Rhodes stabs collide with off-kilter dub FX and soft vocal snippets giving the track a laid-back, live-band feel that harks back to their See You When You Get There era.

Hubcap Candy dives deep into funk territory.  Nebraska’s on point boogie bassline drives the track forward as crunchy drums and layers of synths create a dreamlike haze. It’s loopy, moody, and finds Session Victim at their very best.

Closing out the EP we have the original of Behind The Glass, a headsy, beatdown piece that slowly unfolds over an unconventional brass-like bassline and delicate guitar textures, paying homage to the golden age of Trip Hop haziness and it’s pioneer turntable spirit.

Blending crate-digging sensibilities with forward-thinking production, this latest release solidifies Session Victim’s reputation as genre-blurring tastemakers, and their chemistry with Delusions Of Grandeur remains as strong as ever.
