We are excited and honoured to round out a third year of podcasts at Juno Plus with a mix from Ital, the Brooklyn-based musician whose name in recent years should be familiar to anyone with an interest in contemporary electronic music. Daniel Martin-McCormack has been one of the most notable artists to cross from an art-rock background into the world of club music, first with 100% Silk in 2011, and then with several releases on Planet Mu last year. Queasy synth lines, unstable rhythms and an occasionally bold approach to sampling, characterised Ital’s pair of LPs in particular, though his most recent material has demonstrated an evolution in sound, and it seems, approach.

A collaborative release with Jamal Moss under the name Interplanetary Prophets was perhaps the most high profile project Martin-McCormack has been involved in this year. The Zero Hour EP arrived on Planet Mu over the summer and was the first Interplanetary Prophets material committed to vinyl after the pair were invited to perform at last year’s Unsound festival in Krakow. Subsequent to this, Martin-McCormack made an appearance on the Workshop label and also revived the dormant Lovers Rock label with the two-track Throbbing 12” - both offering a hint that the Ital sound is expanding its remit. It’s nice to see this approach seep into Martin-McCormack’s DJing too, with a wonderfully wide ranging mix for us where tracks tend to consume one another.

Looking forward to next year, it seems the Lovers Rock label is taking a more prominent role in Ital’s life, with a fourth release from long-term collaborator Jacob Long pending under his Earthen Sea alias. This forms part of the discussion we had over email to accompany the mix, along with some questions on preferred attire when executing a DJ mix and how to make the perfect burger. Manchester native Andi Hanley was for years one of the great things about NYC, charming, low-key, a great great DJ, he quietly was a graceful presence in the land of the overhyped and ego driven. For years Andi held down the music supervision for Rock Star games and was responsible for a lot of great music getting out to the gaming masses, Andi also was a vital member of Body and Soul, for years doing the warm up and setting the sound palette for Danny, FK, and Joe. Andi has since moved back to Manc, and is currently on the hunt for his own space to install his system and set up a proper party. (tell us when chief!) We are happy to have this great set from him, and we are also happy to have the great Disques Town drawing he did for us!

Prins Thomas, the man from Norway, has been DJ'ing producing and remixing at a steady pace since the late 90's. One of the more celebrated figures in contemporary dance music, T has come a long way from his start as a break dancer and musician in a range of bands. He runs several labels, most notably Full Pupp, has released several lps ( 2 solo, 2 with frequent collaborator Lindstrom ) has an extensive discography (understatement) and has been touring worldwide sharing extended dynamic sets that are an amalgamation of disco, house, cosmic, psychedelic and balearica. T is the biz, he keeps it deep, fresh and intimate. As you are reading this T is bringing his Orchestra - The Prins Thomas Orchestra - to Istambul for some live shows. Mix of the Week #599: the Beat Broker - Extended Summer

It feels quite surreal to say this, but Episode 03 of the Balearic London mix series is brought by none other than Italo house legend Don Carlos. Starting his DJ career in the late 70s, he is best known for his production debut 'Alone'. Widely known as the epitome of what dream house is, the track combines emotive piano chords, crisp percussion, and ethereal pads in what is beautifully floaty yet perfectly punchy perfection. Since then he's released more underground hits under his own name as well as his Montego Bay and Aquanauts monikers. He isn't just a legend of the 90s though, his releases in the recent years on Freerange Records, Utopia, Irma Records, and remixes on Wolf Music and more show that his music sounds as fresh now as ever.
