After last month's stellar and extensively-worded inauguration of the Juno Plus Staff Mix series from James, this mix is less conceptually loaded and thus the words that follow are all the more brief. The intention here is to present some records I have personally enjoyed over the past few months - it’s largely a current selection apart from one or two tracks - and felt would fit right next to each other within the context of a mix.
If you follow Juno Plus then you won't really find any surprises within the hour long selection with the tracklisting consisting of artists, labels and records that tend to feature in my suggestions for coverage as well as my monthly vinyl orders. Future mixes consisting entirely of tracks from my growing collections of cassette tapes are on the cards however. Laid down in one take using two 1210s and a Pioneer DJM900NXS one afternoon last week in Juno’s equipment showroom, the searing heat explains the more than liberal usage of the DJM 900 dub and delay effect when mixing tracks.

Juno Plus Staff Mix Vol. 2 - Tony Poland

Venerated heavyweights Surgeon and Speedy J cement their Multiples collaborative project with a long-form album of tweaked experiments past the outer reaches of the techno realm. Recorded over the course of two days at Speedy J’s STOOR lab in Rotterdam, Two Hours Or Something is what happens when decades-deep experts in the field plug their hardware in and jam without time constraints or crowd expectations. In these raw, one-take, no-edit sessions there are propulsive moments of techno and electro balanced out by extended beatless passages and a constant experimental instinct which drives the music forward into parts unknown. Following a string of knockout club and festival appearances, this is a fitting document of just how far out Multiples can go when you combine two such experienced and inquisitive minds (and their respective gear).

✈ To celebrate this new episode, we are proud and delighted to host such an iconic figure from the Berlin Techno scene : INLAND (Counterchange Recordings/Figure).

Known for his explorative techno and ambient productions, he’s released numerous EPs on his home label Counterchange, appeared on Ostgut Ton, Figure, Infrastructure, and released his debut LP on Ostgut Ton sub-label A-TON.

Working closely alongside US artist Function between 2014 and 2017, the pair released the comeback record for Function's Infrastructure label, with their now-legendary 'Odeon / Rhyl' EP and went on to compile the heavyweight 'Facticity' compilation, also teaming up on the soaring 'Colwyn Bay' in 2016. 

In 2020 Inland presented a 4 x 12'' box-set compilation and DJ mix entitled 'Stream State', featuring music from contemporaries like Efdemin, Peter Van Hoesen, Joel Mull, DJ Skull, Mark Broom and many more. This was closely followed by the full-length LP, 'Potential Current' (COUTER016), and 2 acclaimed EPs of up-temp, peak-time tracks in 2022, 'Namsan' and the BRETT offshoot label (BRETT001), igniting some of Davenport's most frenetic work to date.

Julia Govor is one of those artists who can take the fundamentals of techno and make it sound hers. At this point in her career, the Georgia-born, New York City-based artist has established a style that feels half-Rome school, half Japanese hypnotic techno, but fully Julia Govor. Her label Jujuka has become a home for the stuff, featuring plenty of her own work along with like-minded folks like EMIT and Victoria Mussi, and she recently put out the biggest and best release of her career with the hefty Laika And Ulka Were Here on Semantica.

Her production style carries over to her DJing. Govor's RA Podcast is made up over half her own tracks, and the cuts she picks from others match her style: twirling arpeggios, rushing cascades of synth, heavy but groovy kicks. Much has been made of her childhood in a military family, and how she fell in love with techno via her classical musical education, where she felt drawn to the darker, romantic shades of composition. You get some of that here, but to call Govor's style "dark" would be overly simplistic. Instead it's sleek, aerodynamic and fluid, the kind of techno that gets you lost in a wormhole.
