O Yuki Conjugate have been active since 1982. Initially embracing Post Punk currents they evolved into early pioneers of Fourth World music and still very active have never stopped evolving. In the mid 90s their music briefly crossed over with the fringes of the club scene as their “Equator” album became something of an ambient classic. Signed to ultra cult Dutch label Staalplaat, a label as far removed from the club world as one might imagine, they nevertheless decided to release a club friendly 12” with a remix from Charles Webster that became an E Music classic. Perhaps the least known of his remixes this ten minute epic take on their ambient masterpiece will melt the hardest heart. 

The original Staalplaat 12” is almost impossible to find so Optimo Music is delighted to make it available again in a slightly reconfigured version. Three divine Sunchemical takes from OYC and a Charles Webster remix that a quarter of a century later sounds as if it might just have been created. Comes in a full colour sleeve designed by Andrew Beltran. Mastered by James Savage.

After his debut "Mare Aperto", Amsterdam-based Gropina returns to the light with a four tracks 12” EP out on Paesaggi Records.

“Microcosmo” is a synth melody with a slow-rolling Roland 606 drum-machine rhythm, Quena flute by Hamburg saxophonist Linus Kleinlosen, ambient pads, and natural field recordings. The atmosphere of the song brings you into a dewdrop in a blade of grass in the early morning hours right after the twilight of a sunny day. Following we fade into a dreamy dancefloor jam called “Awumbuk” where bittersweet chords are backed with a Yamaha RX5 rhythm, a groovy FM baseline from a Yamaha DX100, and Roland D50 Lush pads. On the flip, we can find an adventurous downtempo break jam called “Natura Naturans” marked by trancey elements, a solid bassline, and an evocative flute melody. The journey ends with “Omen” which is a dark slow jam characterized by a live processed drum machine groove with a hint of wave influence and a metaphysical vibe to it.

Side B and the riso-printed insert depict the head of the bifid siren from the Romanesque church of S.Pietro in Gropina. In Christian symbology, the fish-tailed siren represents the seductive power of the senses and illusion, which distracts man from the spiritual realm by attracting him to ephemeral pleasures. Like every human-animal hybrid creature, the siren is the duality of intellect-primordial instincts and the conflict between the double nature of man.

Microcosmo has been conceived and recorded between 2018 and 2020.  The release includes a riso-printed insert and a sticker.
Every copy is hand-stamped.

In the sky above southern Argentina, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti, northern Somalia, and the Atlantic Ocean a hybrid solar eclipse materialized for 7.57 seconds, whilst Margaret Thatcher performed for 45-minutes on Soviet television.

Some days later, The Simpsons cartoon first appears as a series of shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, Diego Maradona wins his first Italian soccer championship with Napoli, and Eighteen-year-old West German pilot Mathias Rust lands a private plane on Red Square in Moscow. In the mists of the world's first conference on artificial life at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the first Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Mainland China opens in Beijing, and Prozac gets approved for use as an antidepressant in the United States."

A lot happened in the year 1987 - the year that Benedikt Frey's latest mini album takes its name from. Coming out via R.i.O, the label he runs with a bunch of friends in Berlin, the six tracks balance light and dark; the past and the future; otherworldly dreams and harsh realities. Sonically it sucks you in and pulls you under, ushering you into a trance-like state that sees dub, trip hop, industrial and downtempo coalesce in perfect harmony.

Her phone screen stared back at her, its brightness forced her to squint in the darkness of her bedroom. She poured over her phone night and day; getting lost in apps that nobody needed; falling into video wormholes in the depths of social media; doom scrolling sections of the internet that she never knew existed. Without it she felt as though she were missing a limb, it had become an extension of her very being - how could she possibly live in a world without cute cat videos, emoji conversations and countless filters at her fingertips?

Leeds-based independent radio station NARR was launched just a few years ago as a space to share and discover experimental music from across the world, from new beat and post-punk to ballroom and noise. As a way to raise money for their studio costs and the running of the station, they've announced their first compilation cassette that's comprised of 10 tracks from NARR residents and friends. Made up of music from the likes of Monophonik, Bleaching Agent and Zmatsusi, the release digs into the outsider sounds at the heart of the station including new wave, synth-pop, avant-garde electronics and dubwise selections.
