Episode 180: RAGBRAI XLIX Registration Opens And a Tribute to John Karras

Did you know a Facebook group exists just for people doing RAGBRAI for the first time? It’s called RAGBRAI Newbies and on the show today is Anna Abrams, the founder of the group, to talk about riding across Iowa for the first time. She wanted to feel more connected with other new riders and decided a Facebook group could provide a place for newbies to voice concerns, worries and questions, knowing other newbies will be facing the same thoughts. This private group, which is not directly associated with RAGBRAI, is a place where riders can ask about any question they may have about the ride, or preparing for the ride. These questions become great subjects of conversation and support that help the entire group.  Group members are friendly and helpful and the community helps newbies feel connected. Anna even hosted a Newbies meet-up last year on the first day of RAGBRAI that was well attended.  Anna will be coming back for her second RAGBRAI in 2022 and she is so excited to continue to share what she learned last year, and to provide a resource for this year’s round of newbies! As the director of operations Phippen will oversee the day-to-day logistics of RAGBRAI including route planning and logistics, town planning, and partner relationships with city, state and county officials, law enforcement, and medical personnel. On this episode meet 1984 Silver Medalist in the Summer Olympics, Nelson Vails. AKA Nelly and the Cheetah. Nelly is the 1st African American to medal in cycling. He has also been  2005 inducted into the Lehigh Valley Velodrome Cycling Hall of Fame as well as the US Bicycle Hall of Fame. He was back in Iowa for another RAGBRAI and we were lucky to get to spend some time with Nelly throughout the week. Episode 214: Meet Olympian Medalist Nelson Vails, Retired Road and Track Cyclist

This week meet Jeff Van Genderen, executive director for the Dream Team. He has been a mentor with the Dream Team since 2017 and shares with us plans for the 50th RAGBRAI. The Dream Team is a 5 month mentorship program for youth in the Des Moines area. The goal is to learn life skills, and so much more, one pedal stroke at a time. This is a completely volunteer based organization and this time of year they are getting ready to launch with a new team of both volunteer mentors along with the next generation of youth cyclists. RAGBRAI director Matt Phippen is on this episode to provide a recap of the 2023 RAGBRAI Route Inspection Ride. A small team of cyclists joined Matt in early June to pedal the same route that riders will ride during RAGBRAI.
