"The Bard's Song (In the Forest)" is an acoustic folk song by power metal band Blind Guardian, originally appearing on their 1992 album Somewhere Far Beyond. The original song features two guitars and thick vocal harmonies not typically found outside choral music, a signature trait of Blind Guardian's music. While a choral arrangement would have been an obvious choice, a string quartet allows for more experimentation and more interesting accompanimental textures. The resulting arrangement is one that maintains the spirit of the original recording while being uniquely expressive as its own work.

‘The Reaper’s Ghost’ was written in 1935 by the American singer, songwriter and ‘minstrel’ Richard Dyer Bennet. He not only wrote his own songs but was an avid collector and recorder of American, English and European folk music. He was a big influence on the 40s and 50s folk revival in the USA- amongst his fans were Pete Seeger, Judy Collins and Joan Baez. He wrote ‘The Reaper’s Ghost’ after overhearing a conversation in a pub in rural Norfolk in the UK. The conversation was about a local farmhand who was seen crossing a hayfield at sunset. He passed behind a pile of hay and was never seen again! The singer on this is Sean Cook (Spiritualized, Lupine Howl & The Flies). We recorded an album with Sean as ‘The Flies’. ‘All too Human’ was released in 1997 and was described as ‘…the Velvets on a David Lynch set’. We just knew that Sean could deliver on this with just the right amount of menace.

Justin Walker is a professional performer, composer, and educator based in Louisville, Kentucky. Justin received his Bachelor of Music Performance in Voice from the University of North Florida and his Master of Music in Choral Conducting at the University of Louisville. He has performed alongside the Louisville Chamber Choir, Louisville Orchestra, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, and Brevard Symphony Orchestra, and has toured internationally with the prestigious University of Louisville Cardinal Singers under the direction of Dr. Kent Hatteberg. Justin’s conducting experience includes performances with the University of Louisville Collegiate Chorale and University Chorus, as well as the University of North Florida Chamber Singers and Osprey Men’s Chorus.

Currently, Justin maintains a private studio where he teaches voice, guitar, and piano to students of all ages. He also composes for choral ensembles, synthesizing his love for Renaissance Italian madrigals with progressive rock and metal to create an interesting, exciting sound seldom heard in choral repertoire. His music has been performed most notably by the University of North Florida Chamber Singers and Osprey Men’s Chorus. Justin is professionally affiliated with the College Music Society, the American Choral Directors Association, and Chorus America.
