Black Light Smoke returns to his Death Decay Magic imprint alongside Léah Lazonick for ‘Work’, backed by remixes from Happy707 and Dina Summer.
A Chicago native now based in New York, Jordan Lieb, aka Black Light Smoke, is an artist who wears many stripes within the realms electronic music. A DJ, producer, songwriter and composer, the diverse talent has also added the title of label boss to his resumé in recent years having founded his imprint, Death Decay Magic. Launched in 2020, releasing material spanning techno, EBM, electro and beyond, the label has welcomed releases and remixes from artists such as Cardopusher, The Hacker and MAN 2.0, to name just a few. Returning for his second EP on the label, mid-June sees Lieb partner alongside Brooklyn-based vocalist and producer Léah Lazonick for ‘Work’, accompanied by remixes from Argentinian duo Happy707 and trio Dina Summer - a collective made up of Kalipo and Local Suicide. Following on from Tu Sei Pazza, Daniel Monaco returns to the Bordello with the bitter taste of the TB303 on his tongue. Acid Maria smoulders with the intensity of a Belgian new beat banger circa 1989. Smoky words whisper over rusted rhythms before the fog and strobe take hold. Cold strings haunt with snaking coils of 303 squawk growing ever bolder in this intense track. The flip is divided into two very different remixes. First up is Curses who approaches the piece in his own unique way. The fanfare and frigid lines of the original are expanded. Strings come care of guitars as a bright synth wave reimaging unfolds, a reimaging with one of the most daring breaks you are likely to ever hear. Younger Than Me close. This interpretation adds a fevered tone to the original. BPMs rise and pitches are pushed while chilly notes soon balloon into a frenzy to bring a full floor energy. Three tracks born to bring brimming basements into the beyond.

Vienna's Florian Stoffelbauer is the man behind the Heap alias. He uses it sporadically to drop cultured deep techno on labels like Mechatronica and Neubau and has done for around six years now. This new long player is the first we have heard from him in almost three years but it has been worth the wait. False Hope on Canadian label Isla is slow and snaking techno with icy atmospheres and a sleek sense of futurism. It's stylish in design and heady in mood with standouts like 'Inner Peace' drawing you into a world of intrigue and mystery. The title track brings lush cosmic melodies over gentle kick patterns and somehow soothes the mind, body and soul. Nice work indeed.

Following releases on Materialism, South Of Saturn, and his previous ‘Tuff Luck’ EP on Hottrax, UK-based DJ/producer James Poole returns to Jamie Jones’ imprint with another set of three skippy, UKG-influenced house tracks for the 99th release on Hottrax.
Leading the release is the title track ‘Make The Dream Work’, which combines a catchy organ lead and soulful vocal samples for a bouncy opening track. ‘Ruff Love’ follows, upping the tempo with pumping drums and heavy basslines before ‘Too Cool To Dance' rounds up the release with stuttery synths and vocal hooks.

Fluidly hurtling in hot after NAA012, the newborn and MODXI, brings a refreshing ambience to Not An Animal Records with a deluxe, tasteful and elegant new release. MODXI is Sam Watts, who, with the help of his improvisational jazz saxophonist father, Trevor Watts and talented electronic producer Thomas Gandey, bring the new beat, Amalgam. The end result? A wondrous 11-minute shuffle that offloads some pure emotive action. Choosing to cruise hood down, Dark-Wave-esk drums skid towards a persistent synth wobble and transmogrify into a sentimental masterpiece. Striking piano chords stretch to the foreground and Trevor’s breathtaking sax complete the succulent harmonies, adding some serious psychotropic seasoning. On the B, experienced moonwalker Roman Flügel rattles the original into a nostalgic Techno bruiser - Toxic, pernicious, and seriously alluring. It winds up and down, weaves in and out, and in signature Flügel fashion adds more psychedelic edge. Whistling synth shots and a growling chunky bass are added to the captivating atmosphere, just before fully kicking off with destructive arpeggiation in the second half. Ouch! To close, the ever so mysterious Frank Butters returns for some explosive remix material, this time coming through with a deadly Electro heater. Watt’s saxophone scorches through the high end alongside a howling bass-line undertone, taking this track someplace else. Stylish Vocoder & synthesiser licks add the finishing touches to this stomper.
