BIO:

HYPERKARMA—the DJ alias of Minneapolis’s Jennifer Waege—knows from dark music. A regular at two of the Twin Cities’ most notable club nights, Dark Energy and Gothess, she began spinning in 2003: “Industrial, noise, ambient, goth, new wave, powernoise, stuff on the darker end of the spectrum,” she says, usually between bands for shows she promoted in Reno. When she moved back to the Twin Cities in 2014, she figured on DJing less, until receiving an invitation to play at a hot new Minneapolis party called Dark Energy—her debut was in 2016—where the DJs blended “that old school industrial sound” Hyperkarma loved with techno.

 

“It was an event that I was really digging,” she says. “The dark beacon of techno was calling my name and I didn’t even realize it was out there, you know? It was an immediate attraction: ‘Oh my god, you can play both of them together?!’”

 MIX NOTES:

For this mix, Hyperkarma has delved into straight-up techno. “Getting involved in the techno lifestyle—it was like jumping into the deep end of the pool. And I decided to swim. Nobody pushed me. I jumped into this willingly. This is the music that speaks to me. This music has changed me. Finding techno was like coming home to me.”

CS: What were some of your formative experiences with goth nights?

JW: I moved to Minneapolis when I was 19, and I went to First Ave a lot. I went to dance nights like Sunday Night Dance Party, and they played stuff like Nitzer Ebb and Nine Inch Nails, but all the goth clubs were 21 and over. As soon as I turned 21, I [started going to] Hard Mondays at The Saloon. I didn't have friends that were into that music, [so] I decided to go on my own. It was a really scary experience. I was used to going out by myself [in] downtown Minneapolis in the 90s. But like, going to the goth club, it just seemed kind of dangerous. Like, ooh, what's gonna happen?
