Expanded Radio Research Unit is an independent radio art platform for innovative works at the intersection of music, spoken word, performance and sound to challenge the limits of broadcasting; a laboratory which considers radio as an art form and a practice of experimentation and creation of multiple sonic possibilities and imaginary spaces. The aim is also to interconnect different cultural and spatial spheres and to explore the techno-sociological nature of radio, alongside its heterogeneous practices of artistic production.
Conceived and curated by sound artist Katatonic Silentio, Expanded Radio Research Unit takes place as a monthly residency on Radio Raheem, the web radio located in the iconic Museum of Design Triennale Milano.

Expanded Radio Research Unit 12

The Polish Radio Experimental Studio (PRES) was founded in 1957 in Warsaw by the official state broadcaster of Poland. It was launched as a space for the creation of independent compositions, sound illustrations for radio dramas, soundtracks for theatre, film and dance. 
The establishment of the Polish Radio Experimental Studio was brainchild of Włodzimierz Sokorski, head of the Radio and Television Committee. Between 1952 and 1956 he was Minister of Culture, as well as a strong advocate of socialist realism, fighting against any manifestation of modernity in music. 
Created only a few years after similar experimental-oriented radio units in Paris (1948), Cologne (1951) and Milan (1955), under the direction of the Studio's founder, Józef Patkowski, PRES became a laboratory for experimentation. 
Despite this, PRES' output has been underrepresented in the history of 20th century music.

On the occasion of the reissue of her 1984 album The Divine Punishment, today Expanded Radio Research Unit dedicates the entire episode to Diamanda Galás through a selection of her outstanding works. 
Diamanda Galás is an American musician, singer-songwriter, visual artist, and soprano and activist. Her commitment to addressing social issues and her involvement in collective action has made her concentrate on themes such as AIDS, mental illness, despair, loss of dignity, political injustice, historical revisionism, and war crimes. 
Belonging to a very particular field of contemporary vocal research and performance art, she uses the voice as an instrument and enriches it by interweaving the technical with the expressive.
Galás has presented mainly her own work, but her live performances have also included works by other musicians, such as the avant-garde composers Iannis Xenakis and Vinko Globokar, jazz musician Bobby Bradford, saxophonist John Zorn, and Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, among others.

Budnikaitė is a Vilnius based visual artist and the co-founder of Insurgency, a label and podcast series focusing on the depths of beat-driven underground industrial and experimental expression of sound. 

She is an honest musical enthusiast, attracted to the bizzare and unorthodox sounds, and constantly inspired by the 80s DIY underground cassette movements. Her introduction to music started at early childhood with her mother being a musicologist, this affected her deep concentration and effort into understanding the complexity of sound. 

Nowadays Budnikaite is the head of curating Insurgency and an occasional DJ looking to explore the hardly visible barriers between contemporary club music, downtempo beats and leftfield.

Comme Des Larmes welcomes: Sophie C. Kübler has worked extensively in the music industry over the past nine years including a five year working period in Berlin for agencies like Geist Agency and HYTE.

Moving 2017 to Mexico City she became account manager for Boiler Room Latin America, co-founder of Yu Yu nightclubs in Mexico City, and curator for NSNS Magazine. Since the beginning of 2021, Sophie has been studying Audio Engineering in Frankfurt and is particularly following the topics: new technologies in film sound, history of film sound, audio culture and 3D audio for film and media productions. 

She has worked for BOOM Library as Sound Designer and is currently part of Cinematic Media in Mexico City as Sound Editor for film and series under supervision of Martin Hernandéz. Under the synonym S(GBA) she publishes small parts of her artistic works.

Driven by the forces of music, sound and curation, S(GBA) —short for Steve (German By Accident)— believes in music as the key to perpetual wonder and soulful expansion. Her musical project is both culmination and ongoing discovery: as a cultural producer and collector of music, spoken word, literature, sound-design, field
recordings and storytelling, each of S(GBA)’s works are maps to intimate journeys where worlds meet, collide and reconcile. S(GBA) is also inspired and informed by multiple locations which include Berlin and Mexico City each of them representing a crucial figure in her own creative development.

Sonoplastiko: An Audio Visual Consultation by Nandele 

Concept:  Sonoplastiko is a sound performance, an audiovisual show of experimental electronic music, and "ambient music". However, the main focus is on sound and how it can be manipulated in a synthetic, or digital, and analog perspective, taking into account the acoustics of the space. 

The performance is compiled with field recordings of urban Maputo the capital Mozambique, plus field recordings from certain parts of Europe, airports, Ikea and others such as dialogues recorded in cassettes from Mozambican journalists and novel writers. 

Artist Bio:  Nandele is one of the most innovative beat makers,sound artists, producers and DJ coming from Mozambique. He is at the forefront of the alternative and experimental music scene with his mix of bass heavy Boom Bap instrumentals, Ambient, Techno, Ebm, dubstep, trap, psychedelic hip-hop beats and the makonde rhythms of Northern Mozambique. 

The son of the first black director of the Mozambican National Radio after the country's independence, this is where he gets his musical background listening in his early age to a vast musical catalog raging from Michael Jackson to Fela Kuti, from Kanda Bongo Man to Santana and Marvin Gaye, which he incorporates it in his beat making. 

A prolific producer and writer, Nandele has written music for contemporary dance performances, films and has a number of band projects including: Cantinho das Cores, The Mute Band (who won best new band at the Mozambican Music Awards in 2016) and Azagaia & Os Cortadores da Lenha. He has collaborated with artists such as Felix Laband (RSA), Dion Monti (CHF), Symbiz (DEU) and Boogz Brown (REU), African Ghost Valley(CAN). 

He has graced stages at some of the biggest festivals in Southern Africa: Afropunk Johannesburg, MTN Bushfire Festival in Swaziland, Azgo Festival in Mozambique. His first E.P. Argolas Deliciosas and his first full length album Likumbi was released through Mozambican independent label Kongoloti Records, he has released Eps/cassettes through label Inserttapes in Sweden (Blu Kidz), Already Dead Tapes 
and Records in Los Angeles (Plafonddeinst) and Cotch International in London (FF). Nandele is also member and founder of an audio-visual group Muave he is part of the Miss collective that recently released a multi-disciplinary performance called Degradação (Re)Generativa, he is part of international collective called Proximal Distal who had recently a residency and will release a publication and a vinyl. 

Nandele has remixed tracks for Dubokaj meets Lee Scratch Perry project and Mothers of Mars, and as producer for Tresor 30 compilation along with techno pioneers (Jeff Mills, Dj Stingray), established and upcoming artists around the world and he is part of artist roaster of Tresor Records as well. He has produced a jingle which was a collaboration with ASAAS Collective from Palestine for Radio Alhara, where he is constantly collaborating and his live performances and mixes are broadcasted. He has produced for the Original Soundtrack for the comic book informais created by Anima Studio Criativo. 

Nandele believes through his music he can do the unimaginable... communicating and taking us on his journey to try to communicate with other planets...

Bright Sounds welcomes prolific Dutch artist Boris Bunnik for a new EP under his most celebrated alias, Conforce. The regular Delsin artist saves this project for his more dance floor driven work and that is the case across all four of the atmospheric tracks here. 

‘Virtue Signalling’ is slick techno that mixes up sci-fi sounds with cavernous dub pads. It’s cerebral and cinematic as well as being driven by the rubbery drums. ‘Black Mesa’ is darker, with a meaning synth line coming in spurts over punchy, broken drums. It’s grand in architecture but still has plenty of rich sonic details. On the flipside, ‘Compulsion’ is more watery, with little life forms suspended in a backlit ocean above slippery drums, where ‘Alka’ is another underwater affair, with beams of light penetrating from above as a dubbed out groove undulates way down deep. Once again then here, Conforce marries form with function in exquisite ways.
