2018’s chilled-out Kiran LP was a first step towards Konduku’s inevitable fate as electronic music producer par excellence. The Dutch performer’s right brain rhythms were perhaps aptly timed, touching a spot made tender by the period of introspection forced upon us by an unprecedented global pandemic. These were spartan experiments in sound that reverberated within the cavernous space isolation prised open but didn’t stay that way for long. With the return to normality came another side to Konduku’s work, productions and real-time sets that focused on a heavier, more techno-leaning sound; though they still took inspiration from bass, sometimes house, and the plangent loops of mid-2000s Italian hypnotica. These beats found a perfect home on Spazio Disponibile, Delsin’s Mantis as well as DJ Nobu’s Bitta label, and even claimed a sublabel all his own on Rotterdam’s Nous'klaer Audio, the music and photography outlet K Series. A highly satisfying alliance of liquid basslines and layered echoes put his name on the rise, and today his relentlessly chugging and nimble beats are very much a known quantity, a unique and welcome proponent for cerebral, subaqueous loops. Bassiani Podcast 223 is top-form Konduku recorded live at the club back in May, three hours of forward-thinking techno that’s thick with ideas and rattling rhythms, far-out frequencies for the temporal lobe that surprise at every turn.

"Dancing has always been visceral to me." The DJ and producer talks about bringing movement into her music practice and the role mythology and meditation plays in art and life.

The Italian-French DJ, producer and dancer Giulia Fournier-Mercadante—AKA GiGi FM—has had a varied, multidisciplinary career. Originally a dancer, Fournier-Mercadante received a scholarship for the New York City Ballet and the contemporary dance outfit Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater as a teenager. Finding the dancing world difficult to navigate, especially in its approach to body image, she graduated and moved to London to focus on music. It was there that she discovered techno and its capacity to heal. She started hosting a regular show on NTS, getting booked locally and then touring around the world.

Today, Fournier-Mercadante has integrated dance into her productions, which use motion sensors to transform physical movement into MIDI. Her use of her body as her basic instrument has led to a unique, kinetic sound palette that defines all of her tracks. In this Exchange, she unpacks how she's worked with this technique and rediscovered her love of dancing, as well as how spirituality, dream states and astrology inform her life and work. Softly crackling, fuzzy, yearning, this other side is a beautiful score that gently laps its ambient hum against any preconceptions his Ute followers have come to form. Its synthesised radiance is a particulate mist you enter into and emerge from, a haunting call that wistfully conjures a different kind of woodland spirit. Marius’ stargazing requiem, an immersive two hour trip for the mind, iridescent and strangely shimmering sounds from the ether.

Recorded live at Horoom in mid-March comes this next instalment from Copenhagen representative Martin Gilleshøj. The DJ, co-founder of KUNE music and arts festival, co-founder of Axces Recordings (and their event series), and head at vinyl dispensary Proton Records is a bulwark of the Danish scene. Alongside pals like previous Bassiani Podcast guest Kasper Marott, Søren Kinch and Popmix he’s been key to his city’s cultural offer, blending groovy dancefloor tracks irrespective of narrow genre categorisations with a focus on high-energy nighttime turnouts. It’s a witty spin on clubland fare, iconoclastic and highly danceable stuff that keeps the happy chemicals unanimously flowing. Another plate to spin: he also now runs Buttheads, an intimate club series turned into a record label for the work of selected friends. Through all these outlets, Martin unravels the common thread that binds his work together, laying open a mix of styles and developing something fresh in their coming together. For Bassiani Podcast 261 Gilleshøj flexes his DJ muscles and delivers three hours of wobbly prime time bangers. Fluid, shapeshifting and soulful rhythms, slick selecting flawlessly woven together, a gradual build that perfectly epitomises Horoom’s spirit. This is a sweaty, long haul set from the Danish polymath and clubfloor mischief-maker.
