Let Mr Punch lead you on a sound journey around an imaginary London, its bells and its ghosts. From Samuel Pepys’ birthplace off Fleet Street and across the river Thames to stare into the Great fire. Climb Pentonville hill and dance on the musical grave of “Joey” Grimaldi the clown. 

Keith de Mendonca began making field recordings in 2000. His audio recordings have been aired on ABC, BBC, ORF and many other radio stations worldwide. Keith’s work has been used in the soundtracks of experimental films and has appeared on CDs.

The Deep Wireless 18 Compilation Album is produced by New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) for the 2024 edition of the annual Deep Wireless Festival of Radio & Transmission Art. The works on the album 'reimagine' the voices and sounds of broadcast transmission and uncover the ghosts of the ether and the latent musicality between station signals. Featured on this album are works from Canada, Portugal and the UK by Bekah Simms, Keith de Mendonca, Cláudio de Pina, Martín Rodriguez, Kat Estacio, AJ Cornell and Rutmeat.

Three nights In Hanoi

Aniruddha Das (https://soundcloud.com/dhangsha) is an electronic musician and educator working at the interface of bass culture and experimental noise. He composes through live improvisation, guided by the principles of minimalism, repetition and fragmentation, creating turbulent soundscapes he describes as “industrial dancehall.” With his considerable experience as a dub producer, he understands the cultural and political implications of low end frequencies and brings those sensibilities with him to his sound art practice. He is fascinated by the possibilities of experimental music infiltrating or having a greater impact on popular culture. Known for his visceral live shows, he has performed under the moniker of Dhangsha (Bengali for ‘destruction’) throughout the UK, Europe and Colombia. With his sister project DSPSSSSD (dispossessed), he explores deeper in to non-metric noise and drone culture.  
 
“What was a crucial sound experience in your life?”
An ongoing crucial sound experience was as an eight year old, listening to his transistor radio at night. Tuning between stations on the shortwave dial, he would hear interference and fluctuating frequencies. He found the sounds comforting and imagined he was receiving messages from Aliens. In retrospect he realised it was probably the first time he considered ‘noise’ to be ’normal.’

MNEMOSYNE #063 - DHANGSHA

A mix of some recordings of playing things I shouldn't on a gramophone. A plywood disk, a square of slate, frozen dish of water, a CD and a cake tin base. A pair of Micbooster Clippys, two JrF contacts and a Geofon were use to capture the full spectrum of sounds. Mixed down and only some stereo balancing, EQ and compression used.

Gramophone Elemental Mix

The mastermind behind Basic Channel, Hard Wax and Rhythm & Sound doesn't do mixes. For RA.1000, he made an exception.

Trace Mark Ernestus's path, and you trace the evolution of electronic sound itself. The timeline of contemporary Berlin is unimaginable without him. At first, that meant Hard Wax, the crucial hub that shaped the early era of the city's techno revolution. Carl Craig once said it plainly: "Mark was ground zero."

From there, Ernestus never stopped. There's the birth of dub techno and the near-flawless catalogue that followed through Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound. There's his immersion in Senegalese mbalax with Ndagga Rhythm Force. Lately, that means Open Ground the Wuppertal bunker that's letting people hear music as never before.

As part three of RA.1000, Ernestus has kindly supplied his first studio DJ mix. As you might expect, it's technically immaculate, but more than that, it feels like a substantial and generous conduit to one of the world's most vital genres.

Amapiano remains underexplored in music media. Publications like our own are still learning to keep pace with the South African sound's global pull, animating millions across the globe. 

You'll hear the range and richness of the genre across the near two-hour mix, from the gothic, percussive stomp of Caltetonic's "Bambela"  to the devotional glow of GemValleyMusiq's "Something Spiritual."

Through all of this, Ernestus has remained understated. He lets the music speak for him, with a quiet honesty that lies in decades of opening doors—creating the conditions for new sounds and scenes to flourish and carry the culture forward.
