"I've been reflecting on a lot of the things that helped me make Loud City Song, and in addition to that, I've been on tour - constantly on the move from one strange place to another very quickly, sitting in a hot van for hours and then jumping out to perform suddenly, getting delirious, not sleeping, etc. We've also been playing shows at a lot of churches, or medieval church ruins, and sacred spaces that reflect so much acoustically that it is inviting to the people as a place for things to be quickly and easily shared - as one musician we played a show with in a church said: "You barely have to do anything!" - Julia

Sean Johnston (@hardwaybros): "Trying to condense 30 years of musical heritage into a 60 minute mix with a talent like Andrew's is like trying to catch lightning in a bottle. Over the three decades that I knew him I was a fan, a friend and eventually partner in A Love From Outer Space. The body of work he left behind runs into many, many hundreds of tracks and covers just about every musical genre known to humanity,  (which of course reflects his relentless creative curiosity and spirit). I decided in the end not to overthink it, and just to roll with a concoction of my favourites, and, as Andrew would have said, tried not to make the joins too obvious..."

Here's the live recording of my breakfast set from the 2B1 gathering out in the middle of the Mojave Desert, CA. The hot sun was shining over this set from 8am-11:30am. Hope you feel some of the desert vibes from that very special morning.

Solid Steel (20th February) Mickey Pearce is our first guest this week, a producer who has released on labels like Ramp, Swamp 81 and Ten Thousand Yen, plus a host of remixes including a recent remix for the last Django Django single. He steps up for Solid Steel with an excellent mix featuring Hodge, DVA, Task Force, Paleman, Damu, recent guests Tessela, Pev & Kowton and packed with loads of unreleased tracks. He says ;
'It's a while since I did a mix like this, as I do a show on Rinse once a month. So i Tried to make it a true reflection of the sort of set I'm playing in the clubs at the moment. Recorded live with 2 CDJs, it features some new stuff from me and my mates.’

The upcoming "Theatrical Techno Illustrated" album from Tokyo Offshore Project is a collection of rare and unreleased tracks from UK house pioneers Simon Lovejoy and Frankie Valentine (between the two of them Simon and Frankie have produced with huge names such as Björk, Carl Cox, Orbital and DJ Harvey) which were recorded between 1990-1995. 

To celebrate the release, Simon Lovejoy has put together an exclusive and amazing mix for us in Discobelle consisting purely of rare 90s electronica.

From playing underneath the African Renaissance Monument, visiting the small island of Goree, gazing upon the wildlife at the Bandia reserve, and befriending so many wonderful locals, Senegal will remain close to my heart throughout this lifetime. DJ and producer IZCO has built up a well-respected rep in London’s garage & grime scene, both through colabs with the likes of Capo Lee, Logan and Nico Lindsay alongside his weekly Rinse show which showcases skilful selections and up & coming guests.

For the second hour we welcome Gilles Peterson in the slot for the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel, a DJ who (along with Coldcut) also presented a show in the 90's on Kiss FM. For this mix he's layed down a 'Brit Funk 1977 - 1982' mix, returning to a period of music that was an important part of his life growing up. Music from independent labels, some run by record shops, like the first track by Cache on Groove Records. This is followed by the classic 'Trip to your mind' by Hudson People, a record that a 15 year old Gilles Peterson caught from them in the crowd at a Purley all-dayer.
