There is an expectation that musical phrases reach an end before the music breathes. Hiccups is written with the idea that players will intentionally pause for breath before the end of a phrase, causing a “hiccup” in the melodic line. The music is full of sixteenth notes to create a sense of urgency and agitation that adds to the discomfort of a melodic line that does not breathe with the musical phrases.
