James Gang - "Funk #49"

The name “Kentucky Jim” first appeared as a surprise liner note from my old friend Charlie Chesterman—and it stuck like a catchy chorus. I hail from Sugartit, Kentucky (yes, it’s real—Google it), where my musical journey kicked off with a band and a full tank of gas. In 1986, I hit the road and eventually found a home in Boston’s legendary music scene, where I spent two unforgettable decades playing clubs, theaters, festivals, and just about any room with a stage. These days, I hang my hat in Washington, D.C., and keep the tunes rolling.

I’ve been the bass guy since I was 15, holding down the low end in bands big and small. While I dabble in a little bit of everything—especially a solo ukulele set that’s become a personal joy—upright bass is my true north. I switched to double bass about 20 years ago, and every gig still teaches me something new. It’s an instrument that keeps you humble, grounded, and grooving.

Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to play alongside an incredible cast of characters: the Bachelors of Art, Dave Sammarco Band, The Family Jewels, the LW with Chili Kurtz and Asa Brebner, and a long stretch with Charlie Chesterman & the Legendary Motorbikes. Each one shaped my sound and reminded me that music is as much about the people you play with as the notes you play.

These days, you’ll find me all over D.C.—on sidewalks, at farmer’s markets, in nightclubs—with my uke in hand or upright bass strapped in. I regularly play with; the Jelly Roll Mortals, The Grandsons, The Parklawn Ramblers, Ruthie and the Wranglers, Janine Wilson and all kinds of Bandhouse Gigs, continuing to chase the next great groove and the next good time.
