Cursed Objects: The Conjured Chest

Two hundred years ago this week, the Marquis de Lafayette visited Frankfort, Kentucky, as just one of many stops on his “victory” tour of the United States after the Revolutionary War. 

The Marquis, featured in the musical Hamilton as “America’s favorite fighting Frenchman,” was a key figure and ally to the burgeoning United States during the Revolutionary War. Kentucky spared no expense celebrating the “hero of two worlds” at a dinner at the Old State Capital for over 2,000 dollars. That would be almost 65,000 dollars today! 

The dinner hosted important figures from inside and outside of the state, with patriotic speeches delivered throughout.
