Depuis samedi dernier se déroule la Semaine de prière pour l’unité des chrétiens. Ils commémorent cette année les 1700 ans du Concile de Nicée, la première assemblée de tous les évêques chrétiens.

This Kentucky history moment is presented by the Kentucky Historical Society, commemorating America’s 250th.
In February 1863, Martha Doram appeared before the Boyle County Clerk and requested a certificate of freedom, or Freedom Papers. Though this document could be easily lost, taken or rejected as counterfeit, it was her only proof of freedom from enslavement if she was questioned. 

Martha’s story is not typical of the African American experience in Kentucky during the Civil War. Her parents were wealthy and free business and landowners of color, Denis and Diadamia Doram. While free from enslavement, they still had to deal with prejudice and struggles to live during this time.

This Kentucky history moment is presented by the Kentucky Historical Society, commemorating America’s 250th.
On March 5, 1964, Martin Luther King Jr., Jackie Robinson, and many others marched on Frankfort. Kentuckians organized the march to fight for the equality of African Americans in the Commonwealth. Facing legal discrimination, segregation, and oppression, marchers pushed the state to end prejudice laws. The march led the way for the passing of the 1966 Kentucky Civil Rights Act, the first passed in a state south of the Mason-Dixon line, and what Dr. King called a “great beacon of light for all men of goodwill.”

Months later the national Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed in DC.

This morning, we are gathered on [Gadigal] Country and we acknowledge and pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.

I pay my respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have contributed to the defence of Australia in times of peace and war, and I would also like to acknowledge all current and former members of the Australian Defence Force here with us today, as well as the family members of Defence personnel.

Thank you for your service and sacrifice, and thank you to the families of our Defence personnel for all your contributions and the support you provide to your loved ones.
Today, we gather with reverence and solemnity to commemorate a significant chapter in our nation's history, a chapter that embodies the courage, sacrifice, and indomitable spirit of our Australian service men and women. On this hallowed occasion of Anzac Day, we come together to honour their legacy and to reflect upon the profound impact their actions have had on our nation and the world.

Anzac Day holds a special place in our collective consciousness, a day that goes beyond mere remembrance – it is a day of deep contemplation and gratitude. It's a day when we remember not only the gallant soldiers who stood on the shores of Gallipoli but also those who have served in conflicts and peacekeeping missions throughout the decades.

The story of our Anzacs begins in the midst of World War I, when brave soldiers from Australia and New Zealand landed on the rugged shores of Gallipoli. Their landing marked a pivotal moment in our history – a moment when our young nations forged their identities through sacrifice, resilience, and the unwavering Anzac spirit.

As we remember the battles fought, the lives lost, and the hardships endured, we must also recognise the enduring spirit of camaraderie that emerged from those testing times. Anzac Day stands as a tribute to the mateship that bound our soldiers together, an unbreakable bond formed through shared trials and triumphs.

Anzac Day serves as a poignant reminder of the cost of conflict, underscoring the importance of working tirelessly toward a world of lasting peace. It's a day to reflect on the lessons of history and to commit ourselves to a future where diplomacy, understanding, and cooperation prevail.

It is a day when we honour not only the brave soldiers of Gallipoli but also those who fought in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and many other conflicts. We remember the sacrifices made by those who never returned and the enduring impact on their families and loved ones. 

Today, we also recognise our current serving members, those men and women who continue to carry the torch of service and sacrifice. Their commitment to protecting our nation, both at home and abroad, is a testament to the values that define us as Australians – integrity, honour, and selflessness. 

Anzac Day is not only about remembering the past; it is about drawing inspiration from the bravery and resilience of those who have served. It is a day to reaffirm our commitment to the principles for which they fought – to stand united, shoulder to shoulder, and defend the freedoms we hold dear. 

It is also a day to remember the families and loved ones of our veterans, who continue to support them during their service and beyond. The burden of separation, the fear of the unknown, and the grief of loss are challenges they face with courage and fortitude. Their strength is the backbone of our defence forces and an integral part of our Anzac story. 

In our communities, the Anzac spirit is alive and well. It is present in the acts of kindness, respect, and support we offer to one another. It is in the stories we share, the memories we hold dear, and the commitment to never forget the sacrifices made. 

As we stand here today, let us not only remember but also recommit ourselves to the values of compassion, inclusivity, and understanding. Echoes of the Anzacs

Two hundred years ago this week, the Marquis de Lafayette visited Frankfort, Kentucky, as just one of many stops on his “victory” tour of the United States after the Revolutionary War. 

The Marquis, featured in the musical Hamilton as “America’s favorite fighting Frenchman,” was a key figure and ally to the burgeoning United States during the Revolutionary War. Kentucky spared no expense celebrating the “hero of two worlds” at a dinner at the Old State Capital for over 2,000 dollars. That would be almost 65,000 dollars today! 

The dinner hosted important figures from inside and outside of the state, with patriotic speeches delivered throughout.
