The light and dark, the fast and slow, the loud and quiet - one cannot exist without the other and opposing qualities, in balance, each bring out the best in life - and often also in music. Berlin-based artist Mareena embodies this interplay perfectly. May it be through her well-built Techno DJ Sets in Clubs all over the world or as Podcast host and Label Owner of the always calming and ever-giving UNRUSH series - Mareena understood the integration of this dualism like few other artists nowadays. A catch-up between Delayed and her was long overdue and our discussion expanded from the 90’ies, over timeless music to the challenges of the life of an artist these days.

This is what Mareena said about the mix:
'I had a lot of ideas for a calm mix. I ended up with a dub techno mix. A genre that is sticking with me since my beginnings. I can't get tired of chords and delays. Since your platform is called “Delayed” it seemed just appropriate ;) The mix is recorded between 115 – 120 BPM. I wanted to create something more chill. A mix you listen to while cooking, having friends over or wandering around the streets. My idea was a deeper psychedelic vibe rather than the usual dance floor music.'

Deep Electronics Podcast # 46 - Pool

For the next interpretation of Far Blue, we have Belgium's Kim Kenis who has carefully weaved together a selection of tracks that represents a more clubby perspective of the concept. Recollecting dance moves. The podcast was made so you could move, as the set was recorded on Kim's home setup when she came back from a night out in Amsterdam. The mood was there, the flow as well. 

We are very much looking forward to having Kim and her flow over on the 24th of May for Pintai x Far Blue at Borisov, but for now we'll be enjoying this glimpse of what's to come.

As the discussions become more intense and end in arguments, they break up and decide to go in different directions and move on, but not without continuing to appreciate each other.

Firstly, thanks to Dj wiggles for the opportunity to contribute to the Kinetic series <3

The mix is experimental and long-form, exploring ambient meditative selections as well as darker bass-heavy and textured tracks from across the bpm spectrum, with several tracks warped far from their original bpm. The pace, mood and energy fluctuate. Some tracks emerge quickly, like intrusive thoughts or distractions, others are  given more time to breathe merging into the mix more subtly. This reflects the often unpredictable and challenging nature of losing and regaining a sense of presence and control. The mix has a symbolic cyclical nature, returning to particular percussive sounds and motifs as it progresses. 

Many philosophies motivate me to DJ including the belief everything is connected to the collective and sound exists at that intersection, it is a universally connecting force that exists at the boundaries where mind and body meet the world. All creative practices are intrinsically informed by the personal experiences of their creator/s. This imbues them with narrative and gives them the potential for human connection at these boundaries. 

The title of the mix “decompression” alludes to the pursuit of emotive release. It is a response to life at present - from harrowing world events, to personal challenges and introspection. I hope people enjoy and connect with it, perhaps finding some peace of mind by its end.

𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐮𝐬 𝐚 𝐛𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭?
I started the Fortune Sessions nights in 2019. Before then I threw a lot of house parties. When I had to move into a house unsuitable for big gatherings I began looking for a venue. 

The Fortune of War is a venue located on Brighton beach. It has an intimate dance floor space indoors for winter events and then a big outdoor space for parties in summer. It’s well-loved by locals, with a friendly and laid-back vibe. For a grassroots night it felt like the perfect fit. 

The first session went well but then Covid hit just before the second event was due to happen. I was disappointed but it gave me time to develop the aim and concept behind the events. I also acquired a better sound system to power them. The second session finally took place in March 2022 and two years on I’m preparing for the 15th!

The Fortune Sessions have always had a multi-genre format with a commitment to diversity behind the decks, and a low-key unpretentious vibe. The venue being a pub rather than a club means that the events draw a crowd of dedicated ravers as well as people just out for a good time. Not everyone who enjoys dance music vibes with the club environment, so I’m glad to be able to platform niche genres in an unintimidating space to a wider audience. The nights being free entry also means its more accessible, giving the opportunity for new musical discovery. On a few occasions I’ve been asked “what IS this music??” by people on the dancefloor.

The sprawling canopy of the banyan tree, with its aerial roots reaching down to the earth, symbolizes the diverse landscape of my musical exploration within this mixtape. Much like the banyan's ability to thrive in various environments, from dense forests to urban landscapes, my mixtape traverses through a multitude of electronic music genres. From the deep, atmospheric beginnings reminiscent of the shaded undergrowth to the vibrant crescendos akin to sunlit clearings, the mixtape mirrors the adaptability and resilience of the banyan tree.

COLA REN is a music producer and DJ based in Guangzhou, China. Her sound is inspired by her observations of humanity, introspection, and experiences traveling the globe. She excels in using sound to depict organic visuals and emotional colors, guiding listeners through rhythms originating from different roots of the world.

Francesco Tamburrano is a Venice based producer who focuses dub techno sounds with bass lines borrowed from techno and deep house to build a “melting Electronic”: sometimes hypnotic, sometimes raw, sometimes groovy. His first EP ‘Soft’ released earlier this year on ECOUL SND label, he’s now working on follow up releases. This mix features some of the current tracks released on the Techenie label. More music from Francesco is expected this year on the [PIRANHA SIBERIA DUB] label.

Sai has been a music nerd since her youth, influenced by styles like postpunk, dark wave, ska, jungle, DnB, and techno. Two trips to Jamaica in the late '90s deepened her passion for dancehall and sound system culture, with the heavy basslines of dub and raggamuffin having a lasting impact on her.

After the pandemic she established the podcast series “Moments Of Light And Darkness” and just began to release mixes by guest djs. In May 2024 we met her at the Superbooth Berlin and listened together to some live dub music. Finally she contributes a dj-mix to our podcast series.

Kerstin Saidykhan a.k.a. Sai has been a music nerd since her youth, influenced by styles like postpunk, dark wave, ska, jungle, DnB, and techno. Two trips to Jamaica in the late ’90s deepened her passion for dancehall and sound system culture, with the heavy basslines of dub and raggamuffin having a lasting impact on her. After the pandemic she established the podcast series “Moments Of Light And Darkness” and just began to release mixes by herself and after a certain time presenting guest mixes, too. The whole development since then was very organic where one thing leads to the other without a certain goal. There are plans to establish a yearly live event. To promote this Sai has built the MLD Compilation via an open call where producers could contribute with a track but stay anonymous. Sai loves to create deep atmospheric mixes around dub techno influenced sounds, combining the classics from earlier days with the current releases, often seasoned with the dub reggae vibes, some broken beats, ambient non beat or other experimental electronic stuff - sometimes darker, sometimes lighter. At the end it's all about moods and feelings from moment to moment what flows into the present time. According to that she calls herself Sai – MLD. MLD is the short form for Moments of Light & Darkness, related to a diverse spectrum in many ways.

Sai - Dub Techno TV Podcast Series #159

After visiting the lakeside dreamland last year I couldn't help myself but imagine on the moment what I would play if I had the opportunity to perform there myself (as any DJ would, I guess). I had different archetypes of sets forming in the back of my mind for different times of the day possible, if the opportunity ever came one day. 
So when I got invited to play the opening of Floresta on Sunday, it first came as a bit of a surprise, but the surprise turned into excitement and it was time to prepare a special set where I could dig into my dub techno collection. 
So, I am very happy to share with you the recording of my set, where I finally had the chance to play slow, deep, dubby and sunny techno in such a setting.

I have experienced a lot of different electronic types and styles during my musical biography which began in the 8oies as a teen with Postpunk and dark wave and develloped further with Ska, Reggae, Jungle, Drum 'n Bass and Techno. Reggae and the Jamaician Soundsystem Culture had also a big influence to me, after visiting Jamaica for two times at the end of the 90ies...

Dubtechno became a very special role to me cause of its introvert meditative attitude which fits very good to me now in the present time.

So music is much more than entertainment to me and shaped my personality by getting much energy from it.
And this is something, what I want to bring over in my diverse and genres overarching mixes.

P.S.: I distance myself from any extremist ideas and religious or political brainwashing attitudes. As well as stigmatization of any kind. I do this to the best of my knowledge and belief.
