HelloMellow / Steve Hex  - Eat, Sleep, Sit, Repeat (Phobium Remix)

Since his first release on Ultimae's Fahrenheit Project compilation in 2001, French electronic music artist Alexandre Scheffer has been making quite a name for himself under his alias Cell with many compilation features, a first album with Indica and several live digital recordings.

[ Hanging Masses ] is an elegant and stylish album in which the various components flow together smoothly as part of carefully crafted compositions. Cell infuses his music with warm melodic bass lines, overlapping pads and gentles pulses creating a sense of perpetual motion.

The album is made of 8 long tracks and features a collaboration with Vincent Villuis aka AES Dana on 'Switch Off'. Created with a wide array of composition tools, from the old analog synthesizers to the state of the art of new technologies,

[ Hanging Masses ] delivers rich and ample soundscapes and constitutes in the artist's heart a homage to Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, Steve Reich.

A few travels Sweden to France and vice-versa; constant bandwidth; and duo H.U.V.A. Network composed an album of immersive tunes infused with oneiric trip-hop, ambient geometries and morning trance.

[ Ephemeris ] is a deep sonic ground swell, an album of contrasts, 10 tracks structured upon subterranean bass lines, transversal and luminous pads, crisp, crunchy beats. A mesmerizing ensemble of fresh atmospheres and intense, forward driving melodies.

The inspiration for the album title comes from the artists Vincent Villuis and Magnus Birgersson's collaboration process, determined by the patterns of encounter in time and space, the alignment of creative moods and coordination of life's innate forces.

I could feel the mana running warm under my skin as the cold desert breeze swept through the valley. The black cloaks of my brethren fluttered like whips in the wind as our caravan slithered on through the desolate fields that had pulled us so far away from our crypt. The sun was setting and with a cry, I ordered us into a halt.  

We were very close now, we could all feel it. Our dragons had been silent for nearly three days and the tension inside of our horde was growing increasingly fierce. I looked down into my hands and saw no trace of the strong fists that had once tamed these giant scaulding creatures. A lifetime flashed before my eyes as I read the scars and wrinkles that ran endlessly across my palms like runes. Then, my eyes jolted toward the horizon as a clap of thunder broke the silence. We all watched as the sun swelled rapidly and we knew that the time had finally come. 

By the pounding fists of Ba'al. 
To the roars of our burning children. 
Death was coming to release us all.

Ondo Fudd – The Fludd

The dynamic duo Benncart and Lux Familiar are back after taking some time off. The third instalment of their series of EP's might just be their hardest, druggiest and most hard hitting release to date. The collection of four club-ready tracks opens with "Blow Yo Head", which turns the classic Fred Wesley & The J.B.'s sample on it's head, creating a frantic, chopped up dancefloor-friendly belter. The vocals on the track are provided by the first lady of the Polish footwork scene - Oth. The EP doesn't lose it's paste there - the second track "Do A Trick" is a example of a how trap and footwork go well when combined together. "Fuck The Summer Up" picks up the tempo of Leikeli47's song of the same name, hitting the peak of the release. 3/4 concludes itself with "Ghetto Expressions", a more mellow and softer ending, albeit still carrying a strong club vibe. Roll yourself one and enjoy. Keep your ears open for the final installment of the series, which will be unveiled in a really near future.

Epithets (2015) is a 12-channel, 44-minute electronic work composed for Tony Myatt & Oli Larkin's "The Morning Line;" a 53-channel hybrid sculpture / acousmatic space currently installed in front of ZKM in Karlsruhe, Germany. The premiere was made as part of Insonic festival on the 24th of November & the piece was entered into the regular circulation of the sculpture, enjoying nightly performances from the 26th on. To describe the piece:

"'Epithets' was created specifically for the Morning Line. It is based around a generative, self-automating Hybrid Analogue-Digital Modular Synthesizer patch that applies principles of Werner Heisenberg's research on "Turbulent Flows" into a series of sub-dividable motor-rhythm arcs that freely wander across the internal soundfields of the sculpture. While structurally similar to early Minimalism, the piece incorporates gradual, almost subliminal shifts between modal & nonlinear tonalities that only become apparent over the piece's complete duration."

This week's junto was to create a track showcasing a favourite tip / trick about a piece of software / hardware. Well, a modular synth is a piece of hardware...
 
One of my favourite tools in making music is to get complexity from simple sources. Here I employ three techniques for doing that: 
1) adding two simple sequences together, 
2) using envelopes to isolate certain notes by volume and timbral changes,
3) using two different delays, with one delay also passed through the second.  

What you hear initially is two oscillators, each playing one of the short sequences. As you can hear, they are different lengths and at different rates, so they overlap and move across each other.  I then gradually bring in a third oscillator playing the (quantised) sum of these two sequences, which is panned hard to the side. This sets up quite a nice three-part harmony.   I then bring in two envelopes to that third oscillator, one for volume and the other for timbre - these envelopes are also triggered at different rates, so that the notes that are being highlighted by each move around in the sequence to give more interesting rhythmic patterns. I then bring in an echo of this (panned hard to the opposite side). This is followed by another echo, which has a much longer delay time and which ping-pongs from side to side.  I then also feed the first echo into the second, setting up a more complex polyrhythm as each note from the sequence appears and reappears around the stereo field. I next bring in some reverb, first on the two original sequences, and then gradually on the other sequence and delays,   before fading out as the reverb is increased to give an effect of drifting away.  All that from one six note and one 8 note loop.
