KGUA host, filmmaker, and podcaster Leigh Anne Lindsey talks with The Longest Trail & award-winning Author Roni McFadden (also Seabiscuit Heritage Foundation board member) from her home in Hayden, Idaho (near  Coeur d'Alene) about their lifelong passion for horses they've known and owned, and their love of packing into the mountains. McFadden talks about her young life in the Sierras and Big Sur mountains during the 1960s, and Lindsey talks about her years as a Rocky Mtn. trail guide, and packing in the Aspen-Snowmass Wilderness area during the 1970s and 80s.

McFadden is a mother of four and grandmother of sixteen. She grew up in Altadena, CA, lived for many years in Mendocino County, and now lives in Hayden, ID with her husband of 50 years John, and her latest horse, Romeo, a treasured "Leapord Appaloosa" (a white pattern in horses characterized by a variable amounts of white in the coat, with or without pigmented leopard spots.) The McFaddens once had property on the North End of the original home of Seabiscuit near Willits in Mendocino County, called Ridgewood Ranch (there is 5K acres left of 16K acres which it was back in Seabiscuit’s Day. Lindsey and her 4 other siblings still own over 700 acres of Seabiscuit's home on the Southwestern side, which their parents named "Linholme Ranch & Vineyards.")

During her time in Mendocino County, McFadden had a career with Redwood Valley Equine, the horse veterinarians who cared for the horses at the ranch for over 25 years, and through that connection she was able to write and publish her first book. "JOSEPHINE~A TALE OF HOPE & HAPPY ENDINGS" a children's book about a great granddaughter of the legendary Seabiscuit who becomes orphaned at four days of age and follows the filly as she is accepted by a surrogate mare. All proceeds of that book go to Seabiscuit Therapeutic Riding Program at Ridgewood.

McFadden has her own small publishing company called THE BISCUIT PRESS, and her love of horses and the unusual experiences she had as a teenager working at a pack station in the High Sierras are what make up her biographical book, "THE LONGEST TRAIL." You can find it on Amazon and at can order from any bookseller in both written and audio form. It is currently in development to be made into a fictional movie.

Lindsey is a life-long horsewoman and a film and video producer at SEA STORM STUDIOS, INC. in the Sea Ranch, CA (Sonoma County), where they are currently working on a feature-length documentary called SEABISCUIT'S LEGACY, plus a supporting podcast(being created from these radio shows).

ISEABISCUIT'S LEGACY is a charitable project being created to help benefit the Seabiscuit Therapeutic Riding Center, along with the Frank R. Howard Foundation (created Seabiscuit's owner, Charles S. Howard, to help build the first hospital in nearby Willits and the Seabiscuit Heritage Foundation (which conserves the land and preserves the history of Seabiscuit for future generations to enjoy). 

The SHF is also the fiscal non-profit sponsor for Lindsey's documentary: 10% of every donation to the Seabiscuit Heritage Foundation marked towards the production of SEABISCUIT'S LEGACY will go to the foundation for their fiscal management. In other words, a portion of every donation will help the foundation preserve the buildings and history, and conserve the land for future generations to enjoy), while also helping to produce this film. 

Filming and editing are underway in 2023, and the documentary crew welcomes everyone who would like to join their journey by donating to their cause to show the positive transformation between horses and humans, and how giving people and animals a chance to thrive can make all the difference in the world.

In this episode we talk with Michael Stocker about the impact sounds in our oceans have on all marine life (including low to mid-frequency sonar, shipping traffic, and blasting). Michael is founding director of Ocean Conservation Research (Sound Science Serving the Sea), where he uses his fluency in bio-acoustics to explore the impacts of noise on ocean animals to inform ocean policy and practice toward decreasing human bio-acoustic impacts on marine habitats.

Ocean Conservation Research is focused on understanding the energy and noise impacts of the industrialization of the ocean, and its consequences on marine life. They engage in marine biological and technological research based on conservation priorities. They use the products of this research to inform the policies and practice of the public, industry, and lawmakers so that we may all become stewards of the sea.

Michael is an acoustician and naturalist by trade and a musician by avocation, he has written and spoken about marine bio-acoustics and the impacts ocean noise pollution on marine life since 1992, presenting in national and regional hearings, National/Int’l TV, radio and news publications, as well as museums, schools, and universities. His understanding of both physics and biology has proven invaluable in court testimony and legal briefs, defending the environment against the dangers of human generated noise in the sea.

Michael has been a panelist and presenter at various professional, trade, and technical conferences, presenting on bio-acoustics and technology. 
He has advised and designed environments and technical online systems for a diverse array of clients including the U.S. National Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C., George Lucas’ “Skywalker Ranch,” and various premier Hollywood sound and film studios.

And as a member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) bio-acoustics committee, and an ANSI delegate to the International Standards Organization (ISO) committee on Underwater Acoustics, Michael has been developing more accurate methods of assessing and expressing the dimensions of the marine acoustic environment and the impacts of noise on marine habitats.

Michael’s book 'Hear Where We Are : Sound, Ecology, and Sense of Place' (Springer 2013) is an assembly of ideas and understandings of human and animal sound perception.
