Revizia - Chronicles

On debut album ‘While I'm Distracted’, London-based New Zealander Arjuna Oakes draws inspiration from contemporary soul and jazz, touches of global folk, electronica, modern classical, and post-rock, with dynamic arrangements and production. ‘While I'm Distracted’ is an album about fighting for your innocence and right to be a vulnerable and honest human. Arjuna’s songwriting explores themes of identity, depression, existentialism, social media, loss of innocence, and finding hope for the future through artistic expression.

“I'm obsessed with albums,” says Arjuna. “I've made seven EPs, but needed time to tackle a full length record. I was using the EPs to learn the craft of how to make a great album, much like a director will make short films before they make a feature. I wanted to take the listener on a journey and spark their imagination. Hopefully the album expresses complex emotions, rather than having an intellectual concept. I'd rather ask questions than answer them”.

Across the album, Arjuna performs vocals, piano, keyboards, synths, production, and wrote the string arrangements. He’s joined by Harrison Scholes on bass, Jo Jenkins and Andre Smith on guitar, Sam Notman on drums, Louisa Williamson on saxophone, Nathan Haines on flute, Kate King on french horn, Leah Thomas on clarinet, Hilary Hayes and Emma Colligan on violin, Chris Van Der Zee on viola, Charley Davenport on cello, Zane Hawkins on percussion, James Macewan on trumpet, and additional production by Callum Mower.

Following the release of his debut EP ‘The Watcher’ in 2019, Arjuna has released various  projects including ‘First Nights’ and ‘Final Days’ (collaborations with longtime friend and co-producer Serebii), released by LA-based record label Innovative Leisure (BADBADNOTGOOD, Allah-Las). ‘First Nights’ debuted at  #5  on KCRW’s top 30 Albums chart with play on BBC 6 Music and BBC 1Xtra. He recently performed for the New Zealand Olympic team in Paris, supported Nathan Haines at The Jazz Cafe, and played sold out shows at 91 Living Room and Servant Jazz Quarters in London.

Had a tough time growin up in Spokane.
An absent father and an alcoholic mother.
Yea, she knew what it was to persevere.

She was married at age 17.
Two kids later, divorced at 19.
Had her third kid at age 21.
In another relationship with a struggling one.

This went on for 8 years.
Till she saw some fears,
He just couldn’t lay off the beers.

Now a single mom with 3 kids.
What an amazing job she did.

With street smarts and little education.
She started college, 30 years of dedication.
She still had to work and provide for the kids.
College start and stop, had to take care of her biz.

A friend of mine has a severely autistic son who is now in his early 20's. He can't speak and has the mind of someone around three years old- but that is determined by the way we think.  Who knows how complex his thinking really is.  His name is Lorenzo. He loves to do puzzles and listen to music. 

One afternoon as I was laying the piano track for this music,  my son was talking to the mother on speaker phone and Lorenzo could hear me playing the piano.  He stopped doing his puzzle to listen.  That is how he connects. He loves music. When I heard that I knew I needed to finish this music for him. I haven't seen this friend for a very long time but she is coming to visit in a few weeks and I will be meeting Lorenzo for the first time. I wonder,  will he recognize the music?

This is the first in a series of eight easy, acoustic, rather short and inconclusive tracks, which I’ve assembled by working on new and reworking on some old material adding parts and sounds. 
Will anything actually happen in the end? Unlikely. Definitely not here. Here it’s a montage of bare arpeggios in various keys.
I recorded this some weeks ago: sorry about the guitar sound, the string squeak is a bit too much; now, I hope to have fixed that investing in a better and more expensive set of strings.

A family member passed way too young.

Summer I drove my dad back and forth.
To the Bamboo Garden where we both work.
Windows rolled down.

Summer started, DJed my first wedding.
Crissy’s friend Jennifer marrying Urlet.

The next day DJ Real from Australia.

He traveled with his daughter to the West Coast.
Hung with us in Portland, chillin the most.

Comraderie of one of my favorite collaborators.

Then off to Chicago the very next week.
Dropped Lydia off at college 2 weeks.

Then in Chicago we stayed with great friends.

Whole fam went to Seattle to say goodbye,
To a family member, celebrate his life.
He was cut short at 49 years old.
Rest in peace Curtis Paris, you lived life bold.

Then came me and Crissy’s wedding anniversary.

17000 square feet to ourselves,
