Dj Mistry is an Indian born Sydney local, who’s dj sets traverse across a range electronic music with an aim to spark intrigue, wonder and escapism on the dancefloor through untamed synths and varying rhythms. 

With an affinity to no genre in particular, Dj Mistry gravitates towards music that is deep, abrasive and cathartic, reflecting the absurdity of the world and the spirit of the individuals and the community who strive to maintain sanity within it.

D-Grade is a DJ and organiser based on Gadigal land, in Sydney Australia. They present ‘serious’ music with cheek, quirk and unpredictability and love to playfully toy at the margins between ‘mind’ and ‘body’ music. D-Grade enjoys frenetic, bossy and beautiful sounds. They’re partial to a good baseline, gritty drums, a gloomy vocal or gaudy guitar riffs. They sometimes appear as Wings of D’sire with good-friend-and-close-collaborator Wingnut, with whom they also put on intermittent, often-elusive boof functions.

Outside playing club focused energetic tracks that leave room for introspection, inside  layering textural pads playful synths and weighty baselines, Heaven spot’s mixes are an escape from the day to day a moment to pause and exhale.

Our dear friend and absolutely wonderful Louisville, Kentucky based DJ sddp (@sddp-dj) delivers a minor masterpiece for SORRYMIX39. Multiple years in the making and featuring artwork by the great Allison Hoffman, Sorry Records presents sddp's 100% Brandy: An Exploration of Bootleg & Edit Culture!

A note from @sddp-dj...

Bootleg, edit, remix, re-edit, re-fix, all are essential tools in any DJ's toolkit. There's one singer in particular you're more likely to see on those white label 12" records or haphazardly named .mp3 files though, Brandy Norwood. So much so that it's basically turned into a running joke, with ScratchaDVA proposing the truly terrifying idea of her waking up one day and coming for the royalties she'd be owed from so many UK producers. It's not just the United Kingdom though, a combination of her once in a lifetime vocal prowess, as well as a major record company that was very liberally pressing up acapella mixes for DJs in the mid to late 1990s, leads to her being sampled by producers all around the world.

This mix highlights three decades worth of unofficial remixes from the singer, spanning a myriad of styles and sounds, collected over the course of about 4 years. I ended up sifting through a good 300 or so tracks, as well as created some of my own edits in the process. Needless to say, the task of trying to highlight as many scenes and sounds as possible was incredibly daunting. In the end, at least one song from her 7 main solo albums, as well as bits from Moesha & other TV/Film appearances were sampled in my 93 minute long tribute to the vocal bible.

This month, we are delighted to welcome Vinsen, based in The Hague, to our series. Slowly and steadily, he’s been crafting a musical realm that drifts between heartwarming melodies, textured soundscapes, and subtle grooves. His mixes and DJ sets reflect a deep passion for storytelling, drawing inspiration from fantasy worlds, sci-fi books, and the everyday beauty of life in his city.

This particular mix was recorded mostly at the enchanting Above Below festival in the UK, surrounded by rolling hills, a gentle brook, blooming trees, and birdsong—a setting that felt straight out of a fairytale. Inspired by the magic of the landscape, Vinsen brought that dreamy atmosphere to The Coombe, the festival’s special ambient stage. The final version has been subtly adapted for a more intimate and conscious listening experience at home.

The trance queen opens RA.998 with her cheeky, break-heavy vision.

The RA Podcast began with RA.001 in 2006. Since then, it's spotlighted the best and brightest in dance music every week, without fail. As we approach our 1,000th episode next month, we're switching things up, pairing artists whose sounds complement one another and, in doing so, zeroing in on the forces shaping the past, present and future of electronic culture.

This week, we shift lanes to Roza Terenzi and Kim Ann Foxman, two artists who strike a rare balance between reverence and reinvention. Both are key figures in queer clubbing circles, deeply informed by the halcyon days of '90s and early '00s club music yet fully committed to pushing it forward.

Each artist has carved out a distinct path. Roza Terenzi started out in Perth, Australia, before making a home in Berlin in 2020, while the Hawaii-born Foxman made her name in New York by way of San Francisco in the early '00s. For RA.998, they've contributed separate mixes, to be enjoyed together as two parts of the same whole.

Roza Terenzi opens with a high-impact A-side. Clocking in at just over an hour, her second mix for us picks up where the first left off, connecting breakbeat, acid, UK garage and trance with an ear for tension and a sense of play. Peppered among the skippy percussion and earworm vocals are moments of proper heft that build and release with purpose. It's cheeky, confident and tailor-made to get any dance floor moving.

While Foxman and Roza Terenzi embrace a fun, vibrant musical style, their work is grounded in intentionality. They're invested in honouring the cultural and political roots of dance music: Foxman has long advocated for a more inclusive, community-driven club scene, while Roza Terenzi was among the first artists to begin pulling shows this summer as a matter of political principle.

Both sides of RA.998 show how the sounds of past eras can be reimagined to move seamlessly with the present. Hopefully you'll even feel a jolt of inspiration to get yourself to the nearest dance floor, ASAP.
