Skin (2015-16)

An analysis of the phenomenon 'opia' as coined in the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, defining neologisms for emotions that do not otherwise have a descriptive term. 

Composed for and premiered by the Esbjerg Ensemble in tandem with Pulsar Festival 2018

Opia (n.) the ambiguous intensity of looking someone in the eye, which can feel simultaneously invasive and vulnerable—their pupils glittering, bottomless and opaque—as if you were peering through a hole in the door of a house, able to tell that there’s someone standing there, but unable to tell if you’re looking in or looking out. 

The piece is presented in three movements. It examines first an intimacy and desire to turn away from the observer, second eyes opening as the lines between observer and observed are blurred, and third the interactions between two pairs of eyes - their shadows and light moving together as one.

I have a deep attraction to the ruggedness of forests and the intense vibrations they emit. Although this piece was not directly inspired by forests, nor is it programatic in other sense for that matter, I feel it brought the nature lover out in me. I think of my music a bit like an English garden, in which the ruggedness of nature is allowed to resonate, with the gardener guiding plants rather than forcing them into geometrical shapes and forms. While I do write very precise harmonies, timbres and textures, I like to allow the music to breath and flow in a way that reflects the natural textures, motions and layers of a forest.

Original Voice Over was written and spoken by Regmend Payn and was added to create this composition into a Story.

Kirsten Milenko- O  (Ft. Reg Payn- Celtic Stone)

Gremlin (2019)for brass mouthpiece and harmon mute. Composed for and performed by Tristram Williams. Premiered July 30 2019, Ian Potter Southbank Centre, Melbourne, Australia.

Gremlin is an expansion of a miniature composed at the 2018 Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music. Scored for brass mouthpiece and harmon mute only, the piece focuses on the physicality of brass playing technique, specifically breath, throat, tongue, and hand movements. When isolated and amplified, the sounds created by these techniques take on a dark, mischievous quality, hissing and growling like a small, furry creature that shouldn’t be fed after midnight.

Studied composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Royal Danish Academy of Music, followed by the 2022-23 Cursus de composition et d’informatique musicale at IRCAM. 

Studied conducting at Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana, Royal Academy of Music on the Sorrell Conductors Program, and currently at the École Normale de Musique de Paris. 

Académicienne for the 2025–27 Académie internationale des jeunes compositrices at l’Orchestre de chambre de Paris.
