Well, well, well... What do we have here? Just Double Helix coming at you with a set showcasing our new Hybrid Live project! This iteration of our dynamic duo includes some smooth as silk selections and mixing from the one and only Peri Meters and live guitar by myself, Aidan Rolfe. These sets, notably my playing, are entirely improvised, so while it is a little rough around the edges, we decided it was a great way to give you a taste of what you'll see in our upcoming gigs... of which there are plenty, thankfully. ◾How did you come up with your dj name: Is actually my real name, Maria Serena and i think there is an harmony to it.

◾How and when did you get into djing: When i was living in Buzios, Brasil i met a friend that was a dj and he helped me download Traktor for my computer and after that i just couldn't stop inquiring more and wanting to learn more, and i started practicing and getting my own tracks until i finally got my own first controller and started practicing, it has been 6 years since then.

◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: Mostly Romanian Djs, minimal house and their way to perceive music and mixes inspires me, wanting to sound like that some day.

◾Describe your sound as a DJ: I am very versatile, i can change styles but i always have my signature minimalistic sound, melodic and minimalistic. 

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: Hopefully i can release my own music some day.

◾How did you come up with your dj name: a while back I made a drawing for a tattoo/ logo that i now have on my leg. The result resembled a geometric claw so that’s where Klaws came about…

◾How and when did you get into djing: 
When I was living in Charleston SC for college more than 15 years ago, a friend of mine from Morocco, Gadi bought some dj equipment and started organizing cool little house parties, which made me wander how the music that I had would fit together. I was immediately hooked and gave it a shot. After that I started playing at parties and clubs in Charleston as well as back in Romania and France for some time before moving to Greenville.    

◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: My inspirations and influences come from many diverse Places such as Romanian breakbeat artists Suie Paparude, all the Detroit techno wizards or some of the earlier Paul Ritch sounds. Not to forget jazz, dub or funk classics. 

◾Describe your sound as a DJ: a blend of dubbed out minimal, deep techno grooves, and a sprinkle of ChicAgo house wrapped together in a funky mixture with lots of dub vibes. According to the settings I play in, I like to keep it deep, spacey, and with a driving groove. 

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: looking forward to an original Klaws release for Pure Perception Records coming up soon, and planning an amazing 48+ hours of music & vibes at Pangea festival - June 10 to 12. More musical collaborations and shows to be announced..😉.

Frequency Underground | Episode 118 | Klaws [minimal techno]

Klaws live mix recorded at the DOB Exploration party this past March. 

Had a blast building sounds from the ground up and taking the listeners & dancers on a musical journey starting with dub and slowly building to minimal, house and techno towards the end of the set.

INTERVIEW WITH NAT BLACK AND MALOKA:

◾How did you come up with your dj name: 
🔸Nat: It honestly found me after a joke between friends. There was an idea to start ‘Spinal Tap’ style spoof 90’s techno group called ‘Bright Black’. I was to be Nat Black and played the Keytar with knobs that ‘Go to 11…….’. ask me after a cocktail. I will tell you more……

🔹Justin: I have been on somewhat of a spiritual journey the past several years and I was researching ayahuasca. In my research I came across this documentary called The Last Shaman. In the documentary this guy visits Peru and the Shaman takes him into a "Maloka" to conduct the spiritual experience with ayahuasca. So, that really resonated with me; a Maloka is a place (or a house or abode) where people go to become enlightened by the Shaman. A place where you surrender yourself, lose yourself, and find yourself; a place where for that moment in time nothing else matters except what is going on in that moment. And I related that experience to dj'ing and having people on the dance floor, where for that period in time, I have their complete trust and openness, to take them on a journey of my own. For me, music is medicinal and spiritual. So, there is commonality between dj'ing and the people on the dancefloor and what I hope they experience, and the people with the Shaman in the Maloka. My, well our Maloka, becomes the dancefloor.
◾How and when did you get into djing: 
🔸Nat: I started djing in 1995 after attending my first couple raves. I met Dj Three at Alternative Record Store in Tampa as a skate punk kid and he would always play records at the counter. I finally bought one and got invited to my first event.  I ended up getting two technics 1200’s and a mixer for my high school graduation and been djing ever since.  Hi my name is Nat and I’m addicted to Vinyl Records

🔹Justin: In St. Louis I started messing with my roommates vinyl. Eventually I was jumping on the decks at afterhour parties once in a while. This was around 2005 maybe...then I got pair of Pioneer cdj 100's and for several years messed with them on and off. It was about 8 or so years ago that I got myself something closer to a club set up in my house and really started the practicing and started Social Study.

◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: 
🔸Nat: Too many to count, I try to be open to everything I hear and experience, but I do love roots reggae and dub, specifically king tubby.  I really love listening to djs craft sets and understand the experience they are trying to convey.  There are so many talented djs in our region and I’m constantly inspired by the music our community shares.

🔹Justin: It’s hard to pin point who; there are so many amazing artists, dj's, and producers who are pushing their sound and staying unique and true to house and techno. Those are the ones that influence me and motivate me.

◾Describe your sound as a DJ:
🔸Nat: Diverse……. I love to play a set to a mood or an idea.  Most of my sets are opening for guests djs that travel the region and its always a great growing experience to try different styles that properly support their vibe and music while maintaining my personal flavor. 🔹Justin: I still appreciate the ethnic and tribal sounds, but my sets recently have not been dominated by that. Right now, I have been really into this blurred line between techno and house. I believe as you dj, and time goes and you grow and mature, your sound should too. Whether I’m playing some minimal house or more of a driving techno set; my sound seems to have a deep, dark, and somewhat psychedelic vibe to it.

Klaws (Pangea Productions / Re:Think Techno/ Pure Perception Records)

Klaws is Pangea Production’s lead conductor and co-creator, as well as founder and active member of the Re:Think Techno label & movement. He has been at the forefront of the electronic scene in the Carolinas and beyond for more than 16 years, together with a collective of likeminded artists. 

Klaws’ sound, a.k.a ‘liquid funk,’ is a combination of deep techno, minimal grooves, a dash of house and a good measure of dub, always keeping it deep, spacey, and with a driving groove. He first got exposed to the sounds of electronic music in his native country Romania. Since then, the passion for driving, cutting-edge music only became stronger.

Klaws has played festivals and events throughout the US, France, Romania, and beyond, organized numerous Pangea Productions & Re:Think Techno events as well as one South East premier underground electronic music festivals, “Welcome to Pangea”, now in it's 16th year. 

Together with the Re:think Techno and Pangea crews, he is highlighting a raw, high quality underground musical and visual immersive experience in all events, with heavy focus on local and regional talent, and also international surprise appearances.
