"venus" was performed at the Phoenix Cultural Centre in Sydney on 30 September 2023, by ELISION: Peter Neville, Marshall McGuire and Ben Ward, conducted by Tristram Williams. Recorded by Richard Hundy and mixed/mastered by RB.

"venus" is a component of the ensemble composition "elsewhen", which itself forms part of the conglomerate composition "PSYCHE". The title refers to the prehistoric figurines with stylised female forms (like the well-known “Venus of Willendorf” in the illustration). It isn’t known whether they were sculpted by men or women or both and for what purpose, although they do seem to embody the origin of what subsequently evolved in human culture as a sense of aesthetic beauty. This composition is so to speak “sculpted” from a musical material which remains mostly consistent in terms of pitch-range, placing the contrabass in its extreme high register almost throughout.

"L'horizon s'obscurcit et la virtuosité instrumentale s'accroît avec Vertiges suspendus pour flûte, clarinette, trio à cordes et piano, commande de Court-Circuit passée au jeune compositeur chilien Matias Fernandez Rosales. La manière, pour le moins musclée, explore le champ spectral des fréquences que libèrent les basses résonnantes du piano (Jean-Marie Cottet) avec une intensité énergétique qui ne laisse d'impressionner. Cette musique de trajectoires réamorce sans cesse le mouvement, ménageant des instants d'une belle incandescence à la faveur des multiphoniques somptueux de la clarinette basse (Pierre Dutrieu). Les timbres fusionnent en un méta-instrument puissant qui porte le son jusqu'à saturation."  Michèle Tosi

Four internationally-renowned musicians come together in an original ensemble. These veterans of free improvisation will reformulate the emblematic instrumental formation of the jazz quartet. Exploration and instant creation are the playgrounds of these strong musical personalities, who draw their inspiration from a multitude of genres including jazz, free-jazz, contemporary classical music and noise.

Catalysis (/kəˈtælɪsɪs/): 1. Dissolution, destruction, ruin. 2. The causing or accelerating of a chemical change by the addition of a catalyst.

The Catalysis cycle is conceived as a series of duets, each of which is composed of identical instruments. The focus in these series lies on the unique acoustic properties of the instrument pairs, with which the cycle addresses how the processes pertaining to such inner workings can be projected to the exterior, and simultaneously generate sonic-temporal images transpiring between micro- and macro-spaces.

Being the first of the series, Catalysis (a), is composed for two guitars. In order to realize the task mentioned above, a digital wave-guide model was designed. Consisting of digital filter and delay line networks, this model displayed specific acoustic activities such as absorption, damping, compression and expansion ratios per unit-time as transfer function parameters, through which the partial decay rates that are akin to various plucking locations were studied in order to engage with sonic-temporal morphologies observed at micro- and macro spaces.
