Playing a pair of near-sine wave voices in a chord sequence, harmonically layered by bit shifting.

Patch Notes:
Qbit Chord oscillator provides two voices on base note and 3rd output, and a 3d voice from the mix output. A 4th voice is a clocked delay by Disting, fed the three other voices, attenuated through a mixer.

Maths provides attack-decay envelopes for voices 1 and 2, and an additional control signal that is a negative-polarity sum of these two envelopes, and an inverted version of the sum. 


Voice 3 gets its basic envelope from the Doepfer VCS Slew Generator. Voice 3 is also attenuated by Math's negative sum CV ducking it against the other two and it is modulated by a copy of the delay signal from voice 4. This envelope shaping is done using a combination of a low pass gate and a low pass filter. 

Math's negative sum CV also modulates delay feedback. The inverted sum CV, with attenuation, moves the wavetable on Chord oscillator, adding a small amount of overtones during note play, like opening a low pass filter.

The chord sequence is controlled by Sputnik voltage source CV sequencer, driving a 10-step chord voicing sequence and a 5-step chord quality sequence. The Sputnik Pulser section provides CV for the master clock speed, feeding Tempi clock module. 

Tempi provides a fast master clock, and slower derived clocks to run the sequences. The main note sequence clock is split into two half-speed clocks, with one of them running though a custom digital delay patch on Torcido to create swing.

The actual note sequences and their triggers come from Klee, the bit-shifting sequencer. Pitches are quantized to a pentatonic scale.

Slopes on voice 1 and 2 are controlled from Addac VC transitions.

Output from ES-8 USB audio interface is captured by Modlogr, my headless recorder on a Raspberry PI. Ableton Live adds some equalizing, a little compression, delay and reverb.

Patch Notes:

Voice 1 is a medium-to-high tonal noise. It is Noise Reap Mino oscillator’s saw, synced to mix output of Qubit Chord oscillator for additional harmonics. It is filtered by 6db channel of LXd low pass gate, which is modulated by a noisy Jupiter Storm output XI. The signal travels through Torcido, for distortion and through AI1004 high pass filter, in turn modulated by Jupiter Storm output VIII.

Voice 2 is the 4-voice chord, from Qubit Chord oscillator, mixed in A-138 with emphasis on the lower voices. The mix runs through Torcido for distortion and then through a 12dB lowpass in Ripples. The oscillator runs in free poly mode, generating 4 independent pitches.

Voice 3 is A-111-6 mini synth voice, generating a pulse wave, run through its internal low pass filter, with the sub-oscillator mixed in. This voice gains additional texture in the A-116 Waveform Processor.

Voice 4 is Plaits oscillator's Inharmonic String model, playing plucked string sounds.

Voice 5 is the melody above the other voices, which is Mino oscillator's sine output with sync from Chords oscillator, filtered in the 12dB channel of LXd low pass gate by an envelope from Maths, going through a clocked delay on Disting, only using the delayed signal, no dry portion.

The basic pitch sequence is generated by Sputnik 5-Step Voltage Source, repeating two rows twice each through A151 sequential switch switched by V-Gates driven by a pulse on step of Voltage Source. 

All 4 lanes from 5-Step Voltage Source are routed into Switch 4, a manual switch, to provide different pitch sequence combinations, but the switch was not actually used during performance.

The pitch is quantized to chromatic half tones in Pico Quant. On every new note, pitch is "softened" by a small amount of slow random noise from Mal-2 noise generator added to the start of the note, scaled in a VCA on a quick envelope from Maths channel 4. The pitch goes to all oscillators, which are tuned at harmonic intervals to each other.

Additional pitches are provided in a rhythmic sequence by CV outputs of Klee the ratcheting sequencer, controlling second and third pitch on Chords oscillator. A CV output from Klee also provides rhythmic variation of the rate control for the chaotic signal generated by Mal-2.

The master clock from Sputnik Pulser controls the 5-step voltage sequence and Tempi, which clocks Klee and the delay on Disting.

The melody on voice 5 is triggered by A160-5 Ratcheting controller, getting fed a pulse from Klee. The envelope for voice 5 is generated by channel 1 on Maths, which is played musically on the response curve knob during the performance.
Addac VV Transitions provides a slider that is played musically during the performance, controlling 4 modulations: shifting the multiplier value on A160-5 for melody voice timing, scaling an input of delay output from Disting influencing the envelope on voice 5 in LXd as a secondary feedback loop on the delay, shifting decay time on Plait's string model to fatten voice 4, and scaling an LFO opening the frequency on Ripples for voice 2. 

2 LFOs modulate distortion and tone on Torcido for voices 1 and 2. Ripples low pass filter, for voice 2, receives an FM control input from a CV output of Klee. Ripples LP4 output provides audio-rate modulation of timbre (excitation and dust) on Plaits for voice 4.

Along with modulating voice 1 in two ways, Jupiter Storm noise oscillator feeds three individual audio signals into VCAs where they are attenuated. Two of these noise signals modulate parameters on A-111-6 for voice 3. One of them modulates the clipping parameter on A-116 for voice voice 3. The frequency knobs for oscillator 2 and 3 of Jupiter Storm are played musically during the performance.

BioDrone

Being named a resident at Berghain is likely an unattainable dream for so many DJs, but for Sedef Adasi, it all happened naturally. The Turkish producer grew up in the mid-sized Bavarian city of Augsburg, where a lack of spaces she felt comfortable with—she's mentioned DJing in shoe stores—led her to start her own party, HAMAM Nights. From there she made her name with a vibrant, diverse sound that encompasses breaks, electro, techno and more, with soft-focus melodies and plenty of vocal hooks. She's one of the first residents at the legendary club to truly reflect the glorious cross-pollination of dance music styles in the '10s, when techno absorbed ideas from dubstep, garage and more. 

Adasi represents both floors of that club, and you could imagine this RA Podcast going down in either room, but of course, she exists outside that club's narrative too. What you'll hear here is a cutting-edge and dynamic blend of electro and Latin techno—with two tracks from 2022 MVP Nick León—mixed with grace and finesse. Her sound is immediately approachable, well-paced and full of catchy moments and breakdowns. Listen and find out.
