As we celebrate our birthday this month, it seemed fitting to invite one of our beloved family members to kick off the first APECAST of 2022. 

Westy has stood as an Ape-X resident for just over 5 years now and has become a permanent fixture in the North-East dance community. We took a few minutes to chat with him about his early experiences of Ape-X, hip-house and what it means to be a resident DJ. Check it via our Instagram 

Over the last 5 years, we have watched the Durham-born talent develop his skills to conduct dance-floors and build atmospheres. Westy possesses an unteachable secret of DJing, which is the ability to inject his spirited personality behind the decks and project it onto any dancefloor. 

After picking up decks at the young age of 13, it explains how he has accumulated such a vast record collection. Taking influences from Afrobeat, hip hop, french house and Detroit techno, it’s sometimes hard to predict what Westy will spin. After supporting the likes of Anna Wall, Kornél Kovács, Mall Grab and Archie Hamilton. The young DJ stands as one of the finest in the North East.

This week’s Local Section Mix comes from Derry wonder boy, Cartin. The exciting youngster has supplied just under two hours of dance floor heaven, running through a multitude of genres with sublime proficiency. Cartin has crafted a frenzied, but classy trip through his extensive knowledge of dance music.

Fresh off the back of a debut Boiler Room performance at the renowned AVA Festival, releases on Extended Play, Nocturne & Rudimentary Records and captivating live set performances at Celtronic, Derry’s very own Cartin features on our ever expanding Local Selection Mix series.

Cartin is undoubtedly one of the most electrifying talents to emerge from the North of Ireland in recent years, Cartin’s animated performances and captivating electronic productions have cemented his status as ‘next up’ in Ireland’s bass heavy talents. Cartin follows in the trailblazing footsteps of recent breakthrough artists such as Kessler and Sputnik One. Incorporating live guitar elements into almost everything he does, it’s these elements that ensure that Cartin stands out in a sea of the same. 

Cartin has provided a kaleidoscopic package of electronic goodies, running through house, breaks, jungle, bass, electro, techno, garage and everything in between. The mix seems like a tribute to the dance floor, and all that Cartin loves. Crafting a mix that defies genre, and weaves into various moods, sections and atmospheres is always a difficult task, and to make it this coherent is that bit more tricky. This is your midweek soundtrack.
