Bill Kouligas is the mind behind one of modern electronic music's greatest and most innovative labels, PAN. His remarkable ear for music meant that he released some of the earliest records from luminaries like Yves Tumor, Helena Hauff and Eartheater, helping to jumpstart several remarkable careers. And each PAN release is lovingly and lavishly packaged like an art object in itself, an approach you can read more about in this month's feature-length cover story.

The Berlin artist's RA Podcast is an audio companion to that cover story, and it underlines not only Kouligas's range as a label A&R but also as a DJ. Reflecting the label's evolution from straight-up noise to musique concréte to leftfield dance music and then avant-pop, the mix cycles through stages of strange, staggered beats, almost celestial ambient music, passages of overwhelming noise and sound that sublimate into floating clouds before solidifying back into club music, and a couple engaging spoken word passages and endless manipulations of the human voice. In other words, it sounds a lot like PAN.

Roqué Rivas - Mutations Of Matters

Over the coming months, Unsound will release a series of recordings made at the Krakow festival, including DJ sets and live shows. 

This first is a recording from Slikback, a young Kenyan producer who played for the first time in Europe at Unsound. The recording is from his first of three shows in Kraków, at @szpitalna1. Affiliated to Uganda’s Nyege Nyege and their sublabel Hakuna Kulala, Slikback only started producing 18 months ago, but has so far has made more than 400 tracks including everything that you hear here. This includes a final track that he made just the day before, inspired by the music he'd heard during the preceding days at Unsound! The mix also features a track by Ogniki, his collaborative project with Morgiana Hz (@karolina_karnacewicz), and an opening remix of an upcoming release by Turning Jewels Into Water. 

Slikback is an original voice at the start of what looks set to be a long career - we can’t wait to hear where he goes next!

"Nieludzie (Ignorance Ha)" is an updated version of the 2019's track that featured on Oramics' Total Solidarity compilation. Now featuring Przemysław Czarnek's (the recently appointed minister of education) infamous dehumanising quote* about the LGBTQ+ community and human rights being drowned out by its doomy stabs. The track's distorted bass and slo-mo deconstruction of ballroom tropes sound even more ominous than ever.

the full sampled quote goes: "Let's defend ourselves from the LGBT ideology. We have to stop listening to this nonsense about some human rights or some equality. These people are not equal to normal people. End of story."

Daily Beats - spectral explorations #1

Freeze (Krzysztof Ostrowski) is a musician, producer and instrumentalist from Bydgoszcz, most frequently associated with broadly defined electronic scene.

Many sound related experiences contribute to his artistic activity: music education, years of music production, audiophile passion and even... regular performances in a military band.

He efficiently travels through various music areas, such as techno, experiment, ambient, dub, jazz, kraut, improvisation. His extensive set of instruments and broad artistic imagination are the identifying marks of the artist who often leans toward experimental and analog solutions like modular synthesizers, VHS samples and cassette releases.

He acts solo, as a duo of audio-visual collaboration Soundscape Mirror (with Tom Skof), and in many other configurations usually related with Bydgoszcz-founded alternative scene from the club Mózg. Together with Mateusz Wysocki Fischerle he creates the IFS duo. He recorded and performed with: Piotr Cisak, Grzegorz Pleszynski (Transmemories), improvised orchestra Come Down to Earth, and many others.
