Program Notes

I’ve written in previous program notes that I only write string quartets if I feel that I have something compelling to say about the repertoire. After all, there have been so many good ones! The last string quartet that I wrote was my second one in 2020, which I consider to be one of my finest pieces. I conceived of the idea of a third string quartet in the spring of 2023, but it was only when I was selected as a composer-in-residence at the Lake George Music Festival did I become motivated to write it. Later, I was also struggling to write this piece after encountering compositional burnout from finishing my dissertation, American Symphonic Journeys. Still, I pressed on. There are many things in this third string quartet that I felt that I had to write. Plus, I am an artist that mostly enjoys challenges.

This is a unique piece for me because it is the first time I am intentionally acknowledging and applying techniques in set theory. I unintentionally flirt and dabble with set theory in recent years, being a fan of Schoenberg and Berg, but this third string quartet is where I really wanted to dive into the ideas. I decided to center the piece around the non-triadic pitch class set C-Db-Eb-E, or 0134, and then build triadic music around it. I also used retrograde and inversion throughout, and shaped the third movement around a twelve-tone row. None of this was just for the sake personal/intellectual pushing. In January 2023, I took the challenging minor field exam in music theory at Indiana University. One of the subjects that I was being test on was on set theory. This was not a subject that I was as strong in as other fields in music theory, but I still thankfully passed. This was a hard academic year, and I am happy to say that I am emerging from the darkness of my degree into an optimistic chapter that is post-Doctor-of-Music. This quartet is a reflection of this stressful time that is transitioning into light and hope.

both a redemption and debut set for me, even the nerves of steel I thought I had; still was nervous for this big night. 
Finally I had a chance to showcase my sonic flavor, I wanted to mix as many genres i loved as possible while curating my own dancefloor vibe, one for the ravers.

Framework's 2Fresh 2 Furious was exactly the vibe. Every DJ on the decks both up and downstairs truly sent it. All night the energy in the club was both intimate and large.

Upstairs started off with some massive heavy Drum and Bass to start, then it was my turn, (the nerves kicked in here as it was already hot and sweaty by then, peak time, here we go...

I was meant to play this exact set, but as you know, not everything turns out the way you want it, but that's ok we are human and we adapt. you gotta read the vibes you knoww?
