For his debut album To Sit Quietly Where Everything is Moving Fast, https://soundcloud.com/love-over-entropy used only one source: a Yamaha DX11 synthesizer. It’s a vintage machine from 1987 that was also used by early IDM and techno producers. “Working with an artificial constraint unleashed a different kind of creativity," says the The Hague-based musician, who normally does not shy away from elaborate productions.

Love over Entropy spent a lot of time working out the correct order of the tracks on the album. "I think it's important that the story also flows well on a higher level. It was a nice puzzle to solve."

Although the Covid pandemic is long behind us, much of the material on this album comes from the days when society was still largely in lockdown. "Which explains the title," says Love over Entropy. "But it also refers to my distancing myself from the hustle and bustle of the dancefloor. Up until then, I was primarily making dance music."

You won't find any kick drums or heavy bass lines on To Sit Quietly Where Everything Is Moving Fast. It is intimate, meditative and often very beautiful ambient music. But not the formless kind that seems to dominate chill-out playlists these days. Tracks like Finnkroken, Tidalene and Rotiriot have a story to tell, with a lot of effort put in to get it just right.

“To me, making music is mostly about the process. So I will spend many hours working on details that probably nobody will ever notice. Above all, the pastoral melodies stand out, undulating back and forth like foam on the surf. The harmonies are reminiscent of Isan, Boards of Canada and Murcof, while the album also pays homage to the Artificial Intelligence period on Warp Records.

According to the Dutch producer, a lot of current ambient music falls short of the original idea, as coined by Brian Eno. "Eno once described ambient as music that should be 'as ignorable as it is interesting', but nowadays it seems to have become 'as unignorable as it is uninteresting'," Love over Entropy says cheekily. "Ambient music really is everywhere, with modern production tools often doing the heavy lifting."

With To Sit Quietly Where Everything is Moving Fast, the producer hopes to make a difference, simply by raising the bar. It's a journey that can be taken both horizontally and vertically, and hopefully offers comfort. Or as the producer describes it: "music that offers a refuge."

Love Over Entropy - Nohmannoh

Jane Fitz took the stage twice with a B2B set this at rural 2024, and she appeared on the final day with her musical partner Jade Seatle, who co-hosts the DIY party “Night Moves” in their home, London. The final day started out rainy, but ended up with sunny skies. This set was deeply connected with such a dramatic ending. Enjoy this euphoric collection of left-field tech house gems.

Futurism, galaxies and space travel. Small Solar System Body ticks all the usual techno boxes. But Dutch techno producer https://soundcloud.com/david-hulsken goes a few steps further on his album The God Particle, released on the Dutch label SoHaSo. "Space has always inspired me," he says. "It is an infinite void filled with possibilities, questions and wonders."

On his second long player (the follow-up to 2023's Fragments of Lost Galaxies), the Dutchman indulges his fascination with the so-called Higgs particle. This elementary piece, also known as The God Particle, helps explain how other particles get their mass. After all, we would not exist without mass. "I find that deeply fascinating", says Hulsken. "The discovery has the potential to completely rewrite our understanding of existence."

In the eight hypnotic techno tracks on The God Particle, Small Solar System Body explores this duality. "The limitless potential of science and technology, but also the risks that come with it. Listeners should not worry about getting caught up in a scientific paper while consuming the album. First and foremost, The God Particle is a musical firework: straight-up techno with massive kicks, fascinating loops and flowing melodies, made for serious sound systems. 

Thanks to the heavy dose of Detroit DNA that Hulsken injects into his energetic productions, tracks like Collider Physics, Particle Pulse and The Higgs Mechanism alternately recall a young Jeff Mills, Damon Wild and Robert Hood. Yes, it's that good. But if you dig a little deeper into the subject matter (and the titles), you can also hear the tension and uncertainties that the discovery of the Higgs particle brings. "What might happen if we managed to harness the power of the God particle in our everyday lives?" wonders Hulsken. "How far can we go before everything goes wrong?

Another Barker masterclass.

Sam Barker asks more from techno. The artist known simply as Barker is one of electronic music's most consistently conscientious and curious producers, challenging listeners to question the norms we accept about our shared culture—whether it's the music that fills the room, the process behind it, or the purpose of the space itself.

British-born yet based in Berlin since 2007, Barker forged a connection to many of the city's leading institutions, including Ostgut Ton, and over the course of a long and fruitful relationship, he carved out one of the more singular paths on the club and label's roster.

Not one for orthodoxy, Barker challenged four-to-the-floor techno framework in favor of melodic experimentation. By decentering or completely stripping away the typical trappings of kick drums and claps, his productions are both light and immersive, buoyant in low-end presence and shimmering in weightless space.

Six years after Utility, his sophomore album Stochastic Drift arrives this month. Shaped by pandemic-driven reinvention, it burrows deeper into harmonic twists and freeform drift. "At some point I became conscious of the process," he wrote of his latest album. "The only thing you can do is embrace the uncertainty and see every change as a potential positive.”

Consider his RA Podcast another sequel. Like his much-beloved 2019 mix for FACT, it's a collage of live recordings and a fitting expression of the artist's own internal spring. RA.982 radiates wide-eyed optimism: percussion cloaked in foggy, swirling pads and trance-like chords, neatly synched in synthetic glimmers. 

All in all, it's an hour of music crafted for contemplation, collective euphoria, or heads-down epiphany—or for that matter, any moment, really, its emotive depth seemingly endless.

If the Slaggy B Show was "the beginning of a new age" then this was the...erm…well…the precursor to the new age? You could compare it to the moment the dinosaurs first looked up and saw a glowing meteorite high in the sky before being blown into a million messy pieces.

Whilst some of my mixes online were recorded without any pre-planning this one certainly was not. I had in my head exactly how I wanted it to be (I even had the name ready) but hit a bit of a brick wall when I realised I didn’t have the records to do it. Over the course of the next 6 months I ransacked all my B sides, started buying a few less Robsoul records and began playing everything I owned at -8. Ultimately what came out of it was a mix that sits proudly up there as Kristopher’s (aka Jagger) favourite mix of mine…of all time.

It was the beginning of the beginning of a new era. A delicate blend of pitched back music that is still faster than most things I play today. And if you close your eyes and think hard enough you can almost taste the calamine lotion.

I also contend that I was the first person in the entire world to start playing that Pepe Bradock remix of mouth but that's for the courts to decide.
