Recorded in July 1981, the song was written by Bowie with Italian producer Giorgio Moroder. The 1981 recording has been described as one of "the finest of Bowie's recordings of the 1980s". A re-recorded version of the song, created a year and a half later, appears on the album Let's Dance (1983). The director Paul Schrader engaged Bowie for a theme song in 1981, with Moroder having already recorded most of the music. Bowie was to put lyrics to the main theme. The B-side is a Moroder-only instrumental which featured no input from Bowie.
The song itself, in keeping with the dark tone of the film, has some goth rock influences, with Bowie singing in a deep baritone croon while being backed up by a female chorus. Bowie's octave leap on the word "gasoline" has been called "a magnificent moment" and "among the most thrilling moments he ever committed to tape".

The best of a bad lot of bootlegs culled from the infamous 'Serious Moonlight Tour' (also occasionally referred to by Bowie fans as the 'Serious Sellout Tour). This may even be the performance that was going to be released around the same time as 'Tonight' as the sound is pretty good.Perhaps the essential Bowie bootleg for even the most casual of fans and 'one hit wonders'. The classic Serious Moonlight soundboard was recorded at the Montreal Forum, USA on the 13th of July 1983 and has been reissued and re-hashed to death. The version I have was released in 1996 and sadly marked the very last bootleg release by the legendary Swingin’ Pig label who were renowned for excellent quality and presentation. For the first time, all of the tracks are in original running order and both Bowie and the masses are on form. Included on this set is a fantastic version of Heroes with a magical little keyboard introduction – this is the way Bowie should have always have done this late 70’s masterpiece instead of the uncharismatic and watered down modern version. Life On Mars is exemplary however, with a great piano durge which breaks into the rest of the band and Station To Station is very impressive indeed. That latter seemingly has a new lease of life, and the gig finishes of with the fantastic Modern Love.......  The setlist
