“This is one of poetry terms, that means a pause used for effect within a line of poetry”- Masaya says. In music, a caesura denotes a brief silent pause. But, how long is the silence? As such the silence is as short or long as the conductor deems necessary.

Lots of beautiful brief silent pauses among outstanding instrumental melodic pieces, subtle and classy percussions, the crack and hiss of inviting noisy sounds, delicate rough textures, gentle ambient drones, charming voices,…managing to create a situation of tension-relaxation very intriguing and fascinating. 

Masaya Kato is a Japanese composer and sound artist based in Yokohama. Influenced much by poetry, video or performing arts and based on perception and cutaneous senses in daily life. Typically his compositions are born out of Fender Rhodes or Piano sketches along with additional sounds of magnetic noises.

We definitely like the idea of a caesura  between music narratives, a space which listeners can fill in with their own speculative history.

Robert Farrugia is a composer from Malta who has released through labels such as Assembly Field, Post Global Recordings, Batenim and more recently Spanish imprint Archives. Robert is a classically trained pianist although his earlier work saw him produce experimental guitar-based music before returning to focus more on piano recordings in 2013. 
Citing Ólafur Arnalds, Stars of the Lid and Taylor Deupree as his major influences, Robert’s work usually starts off with small motifs which are layered with a largely improvisational approach. 

Robert has also performed live many times alongside artists such as Jimmy Bartolo, Joseph Wilkins, Timothy Garrett & Cosmicomics and he has also collaborated with Roman Willi, Warmth and SineRider. He’s also a member of Eyes To Argus, an atmospheric/shoegaze band who have recently released an album entitled ‘VEER’ in October 2017.

‘Almost There’ is an Ambient record with droning synth/piano texture in a similar vein to the aforementioned Stars of the Lid as well as Hammock and is a record that Robert quotes as being his first serious attempt at recording a full length album. It was recorded during the examination period of his first year at University and he used it as a means of breaking away from his hectic routine, over the course of 3 weeks. The contents of the record are soothing yet dramatic as they map out a relaxing space that pauses all of life’s challenges into microscopic slow motion frames. Almost There gives a sense of being on the brink of achievement and as the finish line comes into focus, moments of reflection and triumph overflow.

Valotihkuu is Denis Davydov who is from the industrial Russian city of Cherepovets, with previous releases appearing on Russian independent labels such as Ветер в Ивах and Unline. Denis has been active since 2010 and has amassed a discography which also includes several self-released projects available by his Bandcamp page.
We fell in love with 2017’s ‘Spring and All’ and urged Denis to produce something for Whitelabrecs; he kindly obliged by sending us ‘Fragile Melodies’.

Denis tends to start his recording process by searching for interesting or unusual sounds whether this be background noise or the sounds of outdoors. He then marries these with musical instrument, tape and digital sampler experiments with plenty of resampling and layering as part of the process influenced by dreams, the natural world, stargazing and childhood memories.

In Fragile Melodies, we’re pleased to present a record that could be described as both frail and serene, with Denis having spent a great deal of time editing previously recorded samples of musical instruments. These include bells, lap harp, music box and guitar and he strived to manipulate the sounds so that they could tell a story separately without adding new elements, harmonies and melodic lines. The sounds transform in a unique way, as a sort of scent which floats into the air before you and each time you try to capture this, it dissolves. During the period that this album was created, Denis would walk a lot, listening and thinking about the fragments of sound he had been concocting, trying to reflect on how these could be presented as a light but elusive set of textures. With each walk, he’d be aware of the intangible nature of his own childhood memories as they flickered into focus for a fleeting second. He decided to use Fragile Melodies as a means to transfer such delicacy through sounds, textures and melodies.
