Oh Yeah Habibi: ten years and up-to-date

If you look up the word ‘arabicana’ you find a music genre and its inventors; NO blues. Even after ten years the band that combines Oriëntal roots music and American folk blues is still unique in the world. On the new album Oh Yeah Habibi, NO blues bridges the gap between east and west and changes the Nile and the Mississippi in one meandering musical delta.

Even though the band has been together for ten years, the new album Oh Yeah Habibi sounds direct and fresh like a debut album. U’d player Haytham Safia: “We went back to the core of guitar, u’d, double bass and percussion.” Different from the previous albums, NO blues chooses to use current events as topics for their songs. Songs like Exodus and World Keeps Turning refer to people that seek refuge and Two Trains and Gods Move refer to religious themes.”It struck us that our music seemed to have a different energy after the terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo”, says bassist Anne-Maarten van Heuvelen. “NO blues has always been a political statement in music, we had to follow that up with our lyrics. Guitarist Ad van Meurs: ”We’ve never been a political band, but we don’t look the other way.”

Oh Yeah Habibi is more on topic than previous NO blues albums and the critically acclaimed arabicana from this Dutch based top team that has been working together for ten years, still has great impact. In twelve new studio tracks the band reaches a next level in their musical embrace between east and west.

07 The World Keeps Turning

Released on 'Beating Heart - South Africa Vol. 2', a 4 track EP featuring Auntie Flo, Subjective (Goldie & JD), Card on Spokes and The Happy Show. Out on 30 June.

Following the debut Malawi album​ last year, this next series of Beating Heart releases focuses on the vibrant sounds of South Africa, sampling field recordings made by Hugh Tracey back in the 1950s, with kind permission from the International Library of African Music.

Further volumes featuring a whole host of talent will be released throughout the summer.

Profits from the series will be used to support:​ the Women's Legal Centre, a group of female lawyers striving for gender equality across South Africa, particularly for black women, whose work has had a huge impact on the country's laws, and continues to do so; and the Access Music Project in Grahamstown where students will be able to learn production skills through remixing field recordings from the ILAM ​archive, learning about their heritage in the process.

Beating Heart will be performing​ summer festival takeovers at Glastonbury, Womad, Port Eliot, Boomtown, Obonjan (Croatia) and Secret Garden Party, with events in Malawi, South Africa and Uganda planned for the autumn.

Thanks to previous​ support, the 'Beating Heart - Malawi' album ​(Rudimental, Kidnap Kid, Clap! Clap!, Luke Vibert, Afriquoi & more) ​h​as​ funded the setting up of a sustainable school feeding program in Lilongwe, now feeding 450 kids once a day.

Aser: This set was supposed to be released a few months from today, but sometimes the time just feels right. Yesterday the US embassy moved to Jerusalem in hopes that it will bring peace closer to our door steps, but we believe it is just one more way of breaking international law and the denouncing of Palestinian rights, which drives us further and further away from reaching a peaceful solution. Living under Occupation and Apartheid rule is near impossible, but a lot of beauty is created from living under such circumstances as a way of struggle. This mixtape is a take on Palestinian women’s experiences in their own words and music. I am truly happy and honored to be kicking off this amazing series by the KYBELE project.

In Their Voices 001 // Aser

Archaeological evidence from prehistoric times suggests that the Earth was once viewed as a living, female being. Ancient texts and mythologies support the idea of a female deity associated with the earth and all life. The Phyrigian Earth Mother Kybele was one such figure among many and represented the earth, mountains, caverns, and all nature, the birth of humanity, the universe and everything in it. 

Inspired by this timeless and universal vision, this project is dedicated to featuring and celebrating the bounty and beauty of the creative works of women in music through special podcasts, original releases, and mixtapes curated by women producers, DJs, and musicians of a wide range of genres from around the world. 

In addition to highlighting the works of women in music, Kybele develops opportunities for broader inclusion of and greater collaboration among emerging and established artists  of all backgrounds through the "Friends of Kybele" series.
