Kidnap is an artist whose music overflows with emotion - rich and powerfully evocative.

Recording in London, Kidnap (real name Matthew Relton) likens his process to that of a sculptor, starting with a block of sound and chopping away until a shape emerges. As such, each song exists ornately carved with a handcrafted subtly.

Still just 33, Relton is already something of an industry veteran. Releasing his first single in 2012 kicked off an eight-year stretch of global touring that came to a grinding halt when the pandemic put the world on pause.

2024 marks a new chapter for Kidnap, with his next body of work on the horizon. Set against the backdrop of a changing world and the arrival of a baby daughter, Relton offers a bittersweet reflection on the passing of time. ‘It’s about looking back on the last 12 years — the touring and the friends and the sleeplessness,” says Relton, “and realising that in order to embrace the life I have now, I need to let it all go.’ The music shimmers with nostalgia. Signature sad melodies dance deftly around commanding synth lines, altogether sounding like an artist with a new found sense of purpose.

AKASE is the natural coming together of two inquisitive musical minds. One of them, Harry Agius, comes from an accomplished electronic background, and the other, Robbie Redway, has grown up playing in numerous bands. Having been friends for years, both were keen to expand their sonic horizons and so began working together in 2012. 

Inspiring and influencing each other with their own different perspectives and starting points, the ensuing years have seen the pair get together on a number of occasions for sporadic recording sessions. The unforced, non pressured nature of their collaboration has a been a good thing, though, as it lends AKASE’s music a liveliness and realness that cannot be taught. 

Given Agius’ knack for writing compelling electronics as Midland, and Redway’s penchant for writing proper hooks and moving lyrics, their sound is a perfect coming together of dance and indie. Like a select number of live electronic acts before them, AKASE marry melancholy with romance, synth hooks with stirring vocals. They aren’t driven by dance floor functionality, but instead by composition and compelling musical stories. Summer 2015 will see the project coalesce proper, with a debut album, Graspers, having been signed by influential label !K7 and live shows to follow. As such, get ready for a refreshing new addition to the thriving little niche where dance, sombre avant pop and indie all collide.

Harvey Sutherland, the Melbourne-born record producer, keyboard player, club DJ and bandleader, made a name amongst his hometown’s electronic underground with a string of cult dance singles. Early 12-inches like ‘Bermuda’ and ‘Priestess’ were records in love with classic soul and disco, but his debut album ‘Boy’ was guided by his obsessional traits and habits, ending up in a place he describes as “Neurotic Funk”. 

Boy has seen widespread acclaim since its release, with Resident Advisor noting “[his] sense of musicality has always been head and shoulders above his peers...his songs are full-blooded and fleshed-out…” His latest material is an exercise in techno minimalism — laser-focused club jams like ‘Hummingbird’ and ‘Nobody Like U’ set the stage for Harvey’s next chapter. 

His machine grooves are fired through a prism of crate-digging influences, from Todd Rundgren to Basic Channel and back again. His distinctive synthesiser tones have graced remixes and production for Disclosure, Khruangbin, Genesis Owusu and BadBadNotGood. A seasoned performer, he’s taken his live band to Glastonbury, dragged his Juno-60 into Berghain and turned the Melbourne Recital Centre into a full-fledged nightclub. Eclectic and groovy, Harvey Sutherland is Neurotic Funk.
