The tracks in this mix reflect the Downtempo, Dub and Techno adjacent sound that remains at the forefront of Bristol long running Sunday session, Under Heavy Manners; slow in speed yet blissed with energy and weaved together with precision.

A vital tenet in Bristol’s ecosystem of parties and records, Chris Farrell has spent most of his life channelling the right music to the right people and places. His role behind the counter of some of the city’s most legendary record shops has kept him close to club music’s ever-evolving frontiers, all the while amassing the particular sounds which fit his own exacting tastes.

His long-established record shop and label Idle Hands served to join the dots between all kinds of scenes and sub-genres within and outside of Bristol, but the establishment of new label Devil’s Work points to a more focused platform reflecting the music Farrell stitches together as a DJ. Genre tags are a fools errand, but what he reaches for in his particular path between techno, electro, breakbeat, house, garage, minimal and more is the attitude of rave - a particular way of working the tunes with fearless intent and keeping the energy up.

There’s a stripped-back, bass-loaded sensibility to his sound which chimes with Bristol’s soundsystem tradition and his prior work with Idle Hands, not to mention a deep love and knowledge of dub, but the music Farrell plays out is firmly fixed on moving forwards. Splitting the difference between brand new cuts, his own long-cultivated collection and the odd deeper dig from the 90s, the fundamental is physicality and that elusive quality which separates an average club track from an outstanding one.

Alongside steady club and festival appearances taking in respected top tier events and off-grid sessions alike, Farrell maintains a steady radio presence on Bristol stations SWU and Noods as a direct demonstration of where his sound is steered at any given time. With a life so steeped in seeking out and sharing music, Farrell’s authority comes without question, and his sets celebrate the links between the freshest tunes and the past three decades of dance music culture.
