Gamblers n' Ramblers

Pete Seeger wrote this song based on a 1938 poem by the Welsh poet Idris Davies, who lived in the town of Rhymney, Wales. The poem was written in protest of a pay cut the British government imposed on the coal industry as an austerity measure after WW I. Pete turned it into a protest about mine safety as is evidenced by his changing the line "who robbed the miner" to "who killed the miner". The Byrds then turned it into one of the most quintessential (and best) folk rock songs ever recorded, releasing it on their 1965 debut album "Mr. Tambourine Man".

Jonathan sent me this lovely music, and for some reason I thought of Fibonacci. Not so much the number sequence, but the guy. The numbers are cool and I love them --a series where each is the sum of the two before: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, and so on. They are meaningful because it turns out these numbers appear disproportionately around us: in math, in our preferences, in nature. Like as depicted in the wonderful illustration that Jonathan found to accompany our tune. So many things end up to be described by the numbers. The beautiful numbers! Count the petals on a flower and the result will likely be one of them. How lovely is that? 
But the guy himself popped up in my head when I heard Jonathan's music. I imagined young Fibonacci --almost a thousand years ago now --looking carefully at everything around him: ruminating, fascinated, entirely distracted. So in love with the mystery of the world. To me that is the essence of romance. Young Fibonacci, madly in love with the world.

I MADE A SONG!

The Exciting Backstory: So I decided to update my WAV editing software, Sound Forge, which I bought as discs from a computer software store when that was a thing you could do. Over the years, the original program was bought and sold, became Sony SoundForge, and finally is part of the Magix family of whatever. That's where I found the upgrade. 

But with the upgrade came something I didn't ask for, a music-making program called Music Maker. (Of course!)

Music Maker seems like Garage Band with pretensions to Logic Pro. When I opened it up there was a sample tune ready to go, which was stupid, but enticing enough that I clicked around and managed to create this sick little ditty. It took almost no time. That there was even a vocal track available is proof that nothing matters anymore.

The bad news is that now I'm one of those music-illiterate people who can use a computer to create sounds that put actual musicians out of work.

The good news is that I can't figure out how to make another song with the program. Guess it was just magix!

Enjoy this greatest song ever produced.

This is the French language version of my song "Happy Birthday Baby" from a few years ago. The music is celebratory but also tinged with sadness because the one having the birthday is far away. I added the musette (done on my Korg M1) to make it sound more like a French café song. I would like to thank my fellow SoundCloud poster and fine musician Luc Finella for his very valuable advice and critique. I would also like to give a great big "Thank You!" to Luc's wife, Pascale, for translating my lyrics. Without her efforts this work would not have been possible. Both sets of lyrics are below.

Another Beatles cover.  This is a re-mix of a track I had posted a few years ago.  It isn’t very different though I hope I improved it somewhat.

"Things We Said Today" (Beatles cover)

This is a cover of a cover, so to speak.  The original by The Marvelettes from 1961 was covered by The Beatles in 1963 on their second album, "With The Beatles", and it is The Beatles' version that I am covering here.  It's a repeated four-chord, doo wop progression from the Motown era. Although the lyrics revolve around snail mail  it's still a good, fun song and I like it.

I've been puttering around with the guitar for a number of years and thought it was high time to launch some of these musical musings into cyberspace. My Acoustic Ovation Classical Balladeer guitar (purchased in 1973) has always been the perfect vehicle for such creative meanderings.

The goal of these "cyber-concertos" is for the enthusiast to sit back and allow his/her mind to "float downstream". All of my recordings are on-the-spot "raw" (unmixed & unedited). Here's hoping you fancy my finger frolics half as much as I enjoy creating and arranging them!
