To mark the 100th edition of Laylit, we commissioned some of our most adventurous collaborators to produce remixes of beloved songs from the Arab world. In this first of many compilation releases to come, some remixes reinterpret pop songs from the last decade while others reconfigure classics from the Tarab repertoire for the dancefloor. What they share is a spirit of experimentation and genre-bending that characterizes Laylit’s approach to percussive electronic music.

On her sparse yet entrancing remix of Syrian singer Saria El-Sawas’ beloved “Bas Esma3 Minni”, Loris gives Sawas’ voice center stage. Echoing around a swooning drum track, El-Sawas’ assertive plea sounds as irresistible as ever.

On “Dabkecore شعلت”, Laylit’s very own Nadim Maghzal lends his signature frenetic touch to a Syrian Dabke classic. A rousing staple of the Laylit party dancefloor, Maghzal’s remix doubles down on the percussion and unleashes a dance of infectious vocal loops around the electric Dabkeh keyboard. 

Detroit-based producer, DJ, and songwriter Tammy Lakkis—a Laylit mainstay—takes on Lebanese composer and producer Elias Rahbani’s nursery rhyme from 1976, sung by his sons Ghassan and Jad and recorded in 1976. Her “dark edit” is both bubbly and sinister, the juvenile voices processed to sound plastic and somewhat alien over a jacking bassline and car horns. 

NAR’s addictive remix of pop icon Lebanese Haifa Wehbe’s “Wosoltelha” sets a pummeling drumline against a pitched-up and accelerated treatment of Haifa’s lovesick ballad. 

El Kontessa’s startling, shapeshifting remix of Egyptian singer Angham’s “Fakrak” opens with warped strings and a frozen vocal sample before launching into an explosive, no-holds-barred rush of looped vocals (“You’re on my mind”) and chaotic beats that soon revert to the sluggish trance of the opening.

In the hands of multi-talented Lebanese producer and DJ Jana Saleh, legendary singer and actress Sabah’s mawwal “Abou el Zoulof” is drowned in reverb, pitched down, and punctuated by an intoxicating deep kick drum and a metallic drone. 

New-York-based musician, DJ, and audio artist Dynoman takes on “Abdel Kader”, the anthemic Algerian classic about 12th century Sufi leader Shaikh Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, performed live by raï royalty Khaled, Faudel, and Rachid Taha in Paris, in 1998. Dynoman’s Gear Fourth Bootleg speeds up the original as it gathers propulsive force against a swelling acid bassline.

Inimitable Syrian producer and DJ Hello Psychaleppo takes on none other than the Sultan of Tarab George Wassouf’s Sibhom, a song about lost love and friendship. The remix pairs Wassouf’s unmistakable guttural and melancholy voice over thunderous drum’n’bass.

El Kontessa is based in Cairo and we hope to have her grace our stage one day! In the meantime, enjoy this mix.

El Kontessa is the stage name of Cairo-based DJ, producer, who mainly experiments with Egyptian Mahraganat and pop music, deconstructing the genres in her productions, and also in her DJ sets where she blends them with different genres and elements from Cairo’s soundscapes to astonishing results that are akin to a live set.

She made her music debut as El Kontessa in 2018, performing live shows in Egypt, Tunis, Switzerland, and Jordan and has since featured on various prestigious platforms around the world, such as Nyege Nyege Festival, Boiler Room and Vice magazine, as well as radio stations such as NTS, Rinse FM, Movement Radio and Noods.

Falyakon, is a multi-instrumentalist and DJ based between Palestine and Berlin. She hosts a monthly radio program on Root Radio, and is also co-curator & resident DJ of Al Musalsal; a series of live performances and DJ sets in Palestine and beyond. Falyakon breaks the rules of mixing in multi-layered, genre-defying, erratic sets, that express what being free truly means. She is controlling time and distorting structure by warping rhythms and morphing tones in a journey filled with distant memories, interruptions, and projections of what is to come.

A nocturnal tale of accidental intoxication and the mayhem that ensues, “Bum Bum” becomes, in the hands of the chameleonic Dynoman, a convulsive, Footwork-adjacent frenzy of stuttering drums and laser-beam synths. 

Trust us, you’re going to be playing this one on repeat.
